Discussion

blavatsky (asker) May 11, 2012:
My thanks to one and all !
Ana Maria Edlin May 7, 2012:
I think it is important to maintain the symbolism of the piece. The word sun must stay. We are talking about night and day. The absence of the beloved is the dark night and the appearance of the beloved is the sunrise. Also the beloved is centre of the heart's universe.
blavatsky (asker) May 6, 2012:
Title of First section "Ullah und Udam"

the next section is "Liebe"
blavatsky (asker) May 5, 2012:
Brugsch helped translate the Rosetta Stone which had three texts, two Egyptian ( Heiroglyphic and Demotic ) and one Ancient Greek.
The Common Egyptian Language, Demotic was the second or middle text inscribed on the Rosetta Stone, it contained more detail and was the Main language of the day that people would have read. Brugsch made a great contribution to the translation of the Demotic text of the Rosetta Stone which is now housed in the British Museum.
blavatsky (asker) May 5, 2012:
This term, Herzenssonne, is from the Book of Poetry by Famous Translator, Heinrich Brugsch, entitled, "Die Muse in Teheran"

After seeing the film "Secretariat" ...the term "O Immortal Sun"

comes to mind

My heart's sun

Just another suggestion. "Beloved sun" omits the heart. "sun of my heart" is good. Important is how it sounds with the rest of the poem.
Peer comment(s):

agree Helen Shiner : I think this is lovely - the sun around which my heart revolves is what it brings to mind.

Thank you, Helen.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I like the retention of a theme of unity rather than separation which the use of "of" gives. Your usage maintains the sun as a giver or giving force...I like that....cheers "

beloved sun

Tough one to translate in isolation if you don't know how the rest of the poem fits together..
Peer comment(s):

agree Andreas Hild : beautiful

Thanks, Andy!
agree Ramey Rieger (X) : Would most likely fit best in the metrum, and very nice, to boot

Thanks, Ramey!
neutral Armorel Young : As others have said, the Herzenssonne is almost certainly a person, whereas this sounds as though it is addressed to the sun in the sky

Sun of my heart

Seems like the writer in his hour of despair is calling on the sun in his heart to rise and bring daylight and laughter.
Peer comment(s):

agree Horst Huber (X) : "Sonne" und "lacht", nicht unbedingt neu, aber ...

neutral Helen Shiner : I think the 'apple of his eye' or the 'sunshine in his heart' (both far too kitschy to use, but which convey the meaning) refers to another person.

agree Edwin Miles : Also with Helen, that it probably refers to another person, but don't see that as any reason not to use "Sun of my heart."

agree Sanni Kruger (X) : I think "sun of my heart" would fit in very well here.

agree Wendy Streitparth : or possibly sun of my life
