A single fluid system which utilizes only grout to form the jet grout column. The single system method can generate columns up to 36 inches in diameter. A double fluid system utilizes a fluid grout pumped in conjunction with air. The grout and air are delivered to the monitor in independently of each other and exit the monitor in a concentric horizontal orifice. The air provides a shroud for the fluid grout which enables jet grout columns to be installed with a diameter of from three to six feet.

Double fluid grouting (the disaggregating fluid consists of grout and compressed air):

According to the characteristics of Unit 2, the double fluid jet system should be sufficient for achieving the specified performance criteria (see § 4.2).
However, taking into consideration the nature of the soil and the depth at which the treatment will be executed, the target of 2.0m-diameter columns could be at the limit of the double fluid technique. Groups of columns realized with a triple fluid technique will also be tested; this second technique will allow reaching with major certainty the target diameter of the columns. On the other side, the triple fluid technique will allow lower strength and deformability parameters.
In fact, the excavation works inside the eastern extension of the station, potential launching shaft, are done below the water table and the proposed technical solution aims to create a water-tight jet grout plug under the excavation bottom in order to avoid impacts on the natural groundwater system. In particular, the solution avoids creating a groundwater drawdown in the area surrounding the jobsite.
