I'm looking for a word to signify a collectable metal object which has been stamped like a coin but has no monetary value whatsoever. There are thirteen metal objects altogether. One circular one and twelve fan-shaped ones to surround it.
I had initially thought of "commemorative coin" but the client informed it has no monetary value which is why it is not a "Münze" more a "Medaillen".
Would the word "medallion" fit into this context? Or what else do we call a "coin" which isn't a "coin"?

My feeling is that this might be the term used by coin collectors in this context.
"Gedenkprägung" and "Medaille" are often referred to as virtual synonyms and, provided that you don't have to use both terms in one sentence, wouldn't "commemorative medal" do?

Eine Medaille oder auch Gedenkprägung wird geprägt, um ein Ereignis zu würdigen. Allerdings ist eine Medaille kein Zahlungsmittel und besitzt auch keinen Nennwert. Das ist der wichtige Unterschied zu einer Münze. Viele Medaillen sind mitunter aus Edelmetallen sehr aufwendig und in hoher Qualität geprägt, trotzdem bleiben sie natürlich Gedenkprägungen und kein Zahlungsmittel.

perhaps a term like "commemorative piece(s)" might work here, given that the "Gedenkprägung" is essentially a piece of metal struck with a design to commemorate something/someone.
E.g.:
If someone attempting to sell an item applies the term "coin" to a medal, the situation is quite different. A real coin can be spent, it serves as money. Medals are commemorative pieces that often look like coins, but have no cash value.

commemorative token
I actually prefer your 'commemorative coin', so this is only a suggestion if the client really continues to object to coin.
Token is used for fake coins to go in lockers or trolleys.

| Yes, it does seem that way. It is just that the client has said he feels the word "coin" is "falsch". Of course, if I insist they will no doubt print it but I just need affirmation from my peers that I am correct and haven't overlooked any hidden meanings. |
