Discussion

kashew (asker) May 14, 2011:
@ BDF I'm still dithering on it - but polygons are definitely out!
B D Finch May 14, 2011:
@kashew I somehow don't think so. I reported it as a curiosity and a warning that even reputable sources, such as Dico TP need to be cross-checked. The Dico TP writer might even have found "surveying polygon" on the Tamil dictionary website and reproduced it without checking. However, your own "control point network" does seem to have legs.
kashew (asker) May 13, 2011:
@ BDF Yes, an interesting one, a "new" word, and you ought to post that as an answer: "surveying polygon, control points" which will make a very useful glossary entry.
Thanks
B D Finch May 13, 2011:
Interesting Dico TP gives "surveying polygon, control points". Googling "surveying polygon" gives about 170 hits, not one of which seems to be from a native English-speaking source and most of which seem to be from an online English/Tamil dictionary!
kashew (asker) May 13, 2011:
I think I'll go for: CONTROL POINT NETWORK or survey net, or survey network.
Lara Barnett May 13, 2011:
plan/drawing Is this definitely something laid out on paper, or could it be a model of some sort?

grid

Definition found on the Chambre Syndicale Nationale des Géomètres-Topographes website:
"Canevas
Ensemble de points matérialisés par des bornes, des repères ou encore des points bien identifiés, qui servent d'appui aux levés de plans."
http://www.geometretopographe.com
/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=66&Itemid=93

Further searches on "geophysical surveys" AND "grid" seem to corroborate my hunch among which:
http://www.subtronic.com/geophysical_surveys.html
http://www.revolverresources.com/?page_id=12

"Data is collected as point readings taken at regular intervals along a survey grid set out over the site area. The spacing between grid-lines and reading stations is dependant upon the target size. Generally smaller targets require closer survey lines and denser spaced readings . "
http://www.geophysical.biz/electromagnetic_method.htm

Note from asker:
Thanks. The French definition is a great find - a good description of the "random" pillars in question, but I think "grid" is too organised, geometrical, rigid a system for this particular site.
"Survey grid" is a good general translation indeed.

Check out "canevas" with TERMIUM. I think you'll get what you need there.

OK, qualify the term - survey plan
Note from asker:
Thanks: As easy as that! But I always prefer drawing to plan?
Even if it is a plan view!
