geodetics
Context:
Sur les ouvrages en construction, il existe 4 unités de références topographiques qui sont succinctement rappelées ici :

I looked succinctement at the previous entry on ProZ but could someone have another go?

Definition found on the Chambre Syndicale Nationale des Géomètres-Topographes website:
"Canevas
Ensemble de points matérialisés par des bornes, des repères ou encore des points bien identifiés, qui servent d'appui aux levés de plans."

/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=66&Itemid=93
Further searches on "geophysical surveys" AND "grid" seem to corroborate my hunch among which:
http://www.subtronic.com/geophysical_surveys.html
http://www.revolverresources.com/?page_id=12
"Data is collected as point readings taken at regular intervals along a survey grid set out over the site area. The spacing between grid-lines and reading stations is dependant upon the target size. Generally smaller targets require closer survey lines and denser spaced readings . "

Note from asker:
Thanks. The French definition is a great find - a good description of the "random" pillars in question, but I think "grid" is too organised, geometrical, rigid a system for this particular site. |
"Survey grid" is a good general translation indeed. |

Note from asker:
Thanks: As easy as that! But I always prefer drawing to plan? |
Even if it is a plan view! |
