French term

Lève-vitres AV électriques à impulsion

French to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks
Not sure what the full translation of this would be. It's an isolated term from a list of features on a particular vehicle.
Not convinced that "electric windows" covers it.

Thank you

Discussion

Wendy Streitparth May 27, 2010:
Front windows electrically operated by tapping.
Can't think how to phrase it properly but maybe this helps.
Chris Hall May 27, 2010:
Personally... I would stick with "front electric windows" and ask the client for clarification about "à impulsion".
Wendy Streitparth May 27, 2010:
Front windows electrically operated.......

Electric windows sounds a bit dicey!

Thanks writeaway. Cynical as ever! Actually, I went to some trouble to ensure that my new car had one touch electric front windows and manual rear windows.

Front electric windows with stepper motor

Confidehnce is high except for the "à impulsion" bit.
Note from asker:
Thank you for your help.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Chris Hall : If you could justify how "à impulsion" corresponds to "with stepper motor", then I would agree with you.
28 mins
stepper motors are driven by pulses which is one translation for impulse.
agree writeaway : electric windows with fast glass for the driver. OZ solution http://www.couriermail.com.au/lifestyle/motoring/progress-fo... ;-)

neutral Tony M : Whilst I totally see your logic regarding 'impulsion' relating to pulse-driven stepper motors, I honestly don't think that's actually the case in this particular context.

Well, it *was* low confidence - I have my doubts too :)

We'd also like to see Audi update the headlight, wiper and cruise control stalks, all of which felt clumsy and counter-intuitive to us. We do, however, applaud them for giving buyers one-touch down and one-touch up power windows.

This appears to be written either as
one-touch up or one-touch-up
Peer comment(s):

neutral writeaway : won't get confused with a touch-up, also used for cars? ;-) anyway, the driver's window on my Citroen has a fast button for up and down. and they don't wind.

Another French manufacturer use 'one-touch-up' for impulsionnel in their supplied glossary. For info, leve vitre they translate as window lift..

one-shot front electric windows

My old Austin Montego had electric windows with what they called a "ONE-SHOT DOWN" feature. This meant you pressed the button once and the window wound down all the way. For safety reasons (kids getting their necks stuck) the button had to be held down continually while the window wound up.

My VW Passat has what I might call "one-long-shot up and down" windows: if you hold the button momentarily in the up or down position (and then release it), it will wind all the way up or down. If you press (or pull) it only briefly it will only move an increment.

If you have an early (pre-2000 model-year) MGF, you may have wished that your driver's window had a SINGLE SHOT OPERATION - a feature that is particularly useful when you encounter ticket barriers etc. Well, later MGFs and all TFs do have this feature. After Andrew (Scarlet Fever) Phillips suggested purchasing a multi-function unit to see whether this useful window function could be installed into an early MGF, I decided to look into the idea as well. Interestingly, the SINGLE SHOT OPERATION is regulated by a discreet electronic control unit (ECU) - that is usually located in the driver's foot well of cars so equipped.

"one-shot" may not be understood in the USA, by the way, if this is anything to go by:

Here in the US, our windows won't go up with a "one shot". (Nice phrase BTW) You can go to GBMINI's site and get his wonderful little device to allow windows to close with a "double tap" on the switch.

People all over the Web are moaning that they have to hold a button to open or close some of their car windows, poor souls. Presumably they've never had a car with manual-wind windows. Those were the days!

Better still were the sliding Perspex windows on my Austin Healey!

One-shot windows are the ones with those little "bullet hole" decals on them.
