Посторонние факторы представляют собой незапланированные факторы, влияющие на результаты эксперимента. Они создают угрозу соблюдению внутренней и внешней достоверности эксперимента. Если их не контролировать, они воздействуют на зависимые переменные и тем самым искажают результаты эксперимента. По этой причине они называются также искажающими факторами (confounding variables).
