Japanese term

半数遊泳阻害濃度 (EiC50)

Japanese to English Science Biology (-tech,-chem,micro-)
I'm translating a biology document re: testing on daphnia magna. I googled EiC50 and apparently the E stands for eclosion, but the kanji 遊泳 mean swimming - the two concepts don't seem to have an awful lot to do with each other! What's the connection, and should I be proceeding with the translation as "eclosion-inhibiting concentration"?

Discussion

Steven Smith Jun 20, 2010:
The most apt option Hi Joyce. I think that while 'swimming inhibition' is an accurate description, it probably wouldn't be used by someone writing up a test report in English. Like a lot of toxicity tests this one follows a standard procedure based on international guidelines which originate in English. The OECD test I cited uses 'immobilisation' throughout, and only mentions inability to swim in the definition of immobilisation at the end of the document.

Hi Steven. You shook me up and got me rechecking! I'm sure your answer is fine and, for my part, I've reexamined many websites and still find that swimming ability inhibitory concentration works as well. Experiments are conducted on Daphnia Magna using varying concentrations of toxic chemicals, etc. to observe at what concentrations their swimming abilities are inhibited. (Also, I would state that studies regarding "immobilization" are essentially studies regarding the "inhibition of the ability to swim.") You’ll find many websites that describe the following regarding the Daphnia magna experiments: swimming abilities, swimming inhibition, Inhibition of the Mobility of Daphnia, inhibition of swimming ability, Inhibition test swimming ability of Daphnia magna, etc. I feel a real responsibility when I present answers and would never want to have anyone submit a wrong translation due to an answer of mine.
Steven Smith Jun 20, 2010:
A late disagreement! Found this question while working on similar study. 遊泳阻害 is most definitely 'immobilization'. See http://puck.sourceoecd.org/vl=13688866/cl=13/nw=1/rpsv/ij/oe...
The term should be 'median immobilization concentration'. EiC50 is as per cinefil's answer, but this is additional info, not a definition.
By the way, where is the option to add this to the glossary?

swimming ability inhibitory concentration for 50% (EiC50)

Experiments are being conducted on the fresh water flea, daphnia magna. Their swimming abilities/capabilities are also tested with various concentrations of chemicals.

A comparison of feeding efficiency and swimming ability of Daphnia magna exposed to cypermethrin

Sublethal effects on the gut content of chlorophyll pigments, carbohydrate substances and the swimming ability of D. magna were observed at nominal concentrations between 0.05 and 0.6 μg cypermethrin L−1, which lies within the concentration range occurring in freshwater systems after pesticide application. In addition, the content of chlorophyll pigments in the gut was significantly reduced (>50%) after only 6 h of exposure to 0.1 μg cypermethrin L−1.

effective inhibitory concentration 50

Ajoene showed dose-dependent inhibition, with 50% cytotoxic concentration (CTC50%) and 50% effective inhibitory concentration (EIC50%) values of 1.88 microM and about 0.35 microM, respectively, when the test compound was added before or after HIV-1 infection and incubation carried out at 37 degrees C for 4 days.
