컴퓨터 또는 단말 제어 장치 등에서 여러 개의 단말 장치에 대하여 순차적으로 송신 요구의 유무를 문의하고, 요구가 있을 경우에는 그 단말 장치에 송신을 시작하도록 명령하며 없을 때에는 다음의 단말 장치에 대하여 문의하게 되는 전송 제어 방식. 문의 신호에 포함되는 단말 장치의 주소로 단말 장치가 지정되는데 단말 장치 쪽에서는, 예를 들면 송신 요구가 있을 때에는 데이터를 송신하고 없을 때에는 전송 끝 문자(EOT)를 송신한다. 이 방식에서는 데이터 단말 장치가 제어국으로부터 명령을 받게 될 때까지는 데이터의 송신을 시작하지 않는다. 이 방식은 분기 방식으로 구성된 회선에 적용할 수 있으며, 데이터 처리 센터가 시스템 내의 데이터의 흐름을 제어하였을 경우, 컴퓨터 등의 처리 능력에 따라 문의할 수 있게 된다. 그리고 이 방식은 일반적으로 선택과 병행하여 사용된다.
