English term

D.O.

English Law/Patents birth certificate
an abbreviation designating a person present at birth: M.D. (which I guess stands for Medical Doctor) or D.O. (?)
document: birth certificate

Extra info The birth certificate was issued in the state of Massachusetts. There is also another possible attendant at birth, that is C.N.M. Any idea what that stands for?

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you very much to you all. However strange it may seem, the answers given (and in particular the links provided) show that D.O. is a doctor of osteopathic medicine and is fully qualified to attend child birth in the US."

designated obstetrician

not sure about designated, but I'd rather have an obstetrician at a birth than an doctor in osteopathy.

C.N.M.: Certified Nurse-Midwife, that's for sure, at least.

Greetings,

Nikolaus

D.O. may also be \"doctor in obstetrics\"

Doctor in Osteopathy

This is just to add to my agree (the points should go the first answer, and actually the second one has part of your add on answer correct, too). A D.O. is a Doctor in Osteopathy who then can specialize, just like M.D.'s, in obstetrics, surgery, etc. Take a look at the link below, it explains it very well.
