剪断（せんだん）の「剪」は（植木の）剪定で使われますが、普通はあまり使用されない言葉です。
Shearが大鋏（おおばさみ）を意味することからシャーリングマシンで鋼板を断ち切ることに剪断という言葉が使われたのでしょう。昭和３０年代からは「ガス切断」がこうした業界で一般的になりましたので、「溶断」という言葉が使われだしました。「溶断」は「熔断」とも書け、社名に熔断を使っている会社も多くあります。
最近のプラズマ・レーザも正確にではありませんが「溶断」として考えられますから、鋼板をきるのは「溶断」が大勢といえます。しかし、用語としては**「切断」が一般的でよい**と思います。「切断」ですと剪断も溶断も含みますし、プラズマ・レーザでの加工も含まれる言葉になりましょう。
