: I like your translation "altitudes" -- much simpler than the Spanish original! :-) --- Also, "surface altitudes" might be a nice compact way of saying your other alternative "altitudes of the surface," and it gets several hits on google.

Bhumibhamon and Wasuwanich (1970) divided the canopy of hill evergreen forest into 2-3 ***height levels***. The dense forest canopy causes vapour to condense underneath because of the cold air mass in the canopy.

Although it would be interesting to know the canopy cover of each canopy layer this will take too long to measure. Instead, it is best to estimate total cover contributed by all ***height levels*** of woody vegetation with a possible maximum of 100% cover.

I'm only placing this answer to make the point that Sandra Rodriguez IS right. We are talking about altitude of 'terrain' here.
Example sentence:
