There is a difference between "plant" and "machines".A plant is a conglomeration of many different machines in one place producing the different parts to make one endproduct. For example a carmanufacturing plant is not one giant machine building the car all by itself,but rather an assemblyline of different machines and tools producing the vehicle in individual steps.Also the above suggestion of translating "maintenance" for "putzen" I find inaccurate.I'm not so sure that my suggestion is that great there either but it's my attempt at interpreting the by the author suggested difference between "reinigen" and "putzen".I think they might interpret "reinigen" with a general kind of cleaning while in Germany "putzen" would be rather associated with mopping a floor.I also chose the term "running machines" since "running" is according to Langenscheidt a correct translation for "laufend" in this context also it supports the image of machines in motion thus causing hazards to personnel performing possibly dangerous tasks under these circumstances.
