German term

einen thematischen Ausblick geben

German to English Marketing Advertising / Public Relations press release
Hello all!

This is from a press release about a conference. I'm afraid a lot of it is confidential, but this is the sentence:

"Mit dieser Forderung gibt X zugleich einen thematischen Ausblick auf die diesjährige Y Conference."

Does it mean that in X's Forderung is "setting the tone" for Y Conference? Or is he merely "alluding to the topics presented at this year's Y Conference"?

Thanks very much for your help!

Discussion

Hilary Davies Shelby (asker) Sep 26, 2007:
Not really, I'm afraid, Frank. What I CAN tell you is that X *is* involved in the conference, so perhaps he's doing more of a "reveal" here?
Francis Lee (X) Sep 26, 2007:
I appreciate the hush-hush aspect, but can you tell us what the Forderung is and who/what X is? Offhand I'd say e.g. "a foretaste of the content and areas of focus" ...

...sets the focus for...

With this demand X sets the focus for this year's Y conference. Alternatively we could go more literal and say "...provides an overview of the subject matter at this year's Y conference...
Peer comment(s):

disagree Francis Lee (X) : a) doesn't "With this demand X sets the focus" sound like German-style English? b) what kind of "demand"? c) "overview" is IMO wrong here (=Übersicht)

Just a total shot in the dark, Hilary, since the nature of the "Forderung" is so hush-hush and I don't know how much of a surprise it will be for people.
