Russian to English Art/Literary General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters

(Music: A.S. Turishev Lyrics: R. Greinz tr. by E.Studenskaya).
Vitaly Kisin Oct 6, 2006:
tanyazst (asker) Oct 6, 2006:
Irene N Oct 6, 2006:

The "F. D. Roosevelt" quote was actually made by Admiral David Farragut in 1864 while
attacking Confederate forces in Mobile [Alabama] Bay in 1864 during the American Civil War
tanyazst (asker) Oct 6, 2006:
Элина, Ирина, Виталий, I'm with you! :-\

Varyag and its seamen and the way this was exploited in Stalin's USSR) - it is unlikely to find this attitude in songs from the English-speaking world. Agree?
Vitaly Kisin Oct 6, 2006:
Very true, Elina, Irene. however, there is an untranslatable facet here (I step on a dangerous plank now): get killed rather than surrender to the enemy as a sign of honor and self-respect is something very Russian (Метвые сраму не имут, XI век! and

Elina Tsitrin Oct 5, 2006:
Vladimir Lioukaikine (X) Oct 5, 2006:
tanyazst (asker) Oct 5, 2006:

Thanks but: It is a quote from Somerset Moem, with a drunk captain saying before stepping on a narrow trunk serving as a brindge: Slip and fall? Not on your life. Somehow survived in the back of the brain

The enemy won't yeild-I am the proud Varangian!

Just as an example
Peer comment(s):

neutral Vitaly Kisin : who is to yield to whom, Lilit? Varangian - a mythical hero?

I just gave an example, not sure what's the passage about. If someone skrewed loose during the battle he can say whatever comes to his mind and imagine himself a hero. Anyway, thank you for "Varagian" though I was familiar with the word .

The US Marines Hymn (From the halls of Montezuma...)

This might sound ridiculous as a suggestion, but it's the first thing that came to my mind when thinking about readily recognizable (in the US) military songs. It has a nice upbeat, marching melody, lyrics inspiring for the battle, (sort of like the Russian original).
"From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli, we fight our countrys battles in the air, on land, and sea" (or you can pick a different line from the song, for instance "In many a strife we've fought for life And never lost our nerve.")

See the full text and melody here: http://www.uspharmd.com/usmc/mchymn.htm
Note from asker:
I have to say, I really enjoyed this one :)

DAMN THE TORPEDOES; FULL SPEED AHEAD! - F.D. Roosevelt

President Franklin D. Roosevelt
Today in the face of this newest and greatest challenge of them all, we of the United Nations have cleared our decks and taken on battle stations. It is the will of the people that America shall deliver the goods. It can never be doubted that the goods will be delivered by this nation, which believes in the tradition of DAMN THE TORPEDOES; FULL SPEED AHEAD!

This is an equivalent phrase, has nothing to do with what a Russian soldier would quote.
agree Mylord : Agree with Sergei

neutral Vitaly Kisin : this is indeed a good equivalent but in the context, the reader would laugh from here to eternity
