Chinese term

塊錢

Non-PRO Chinese to English Science Education / Pedagogy Grammatical Analysis
Sentence: 我說:「你答應借十塊錢給我,現在給我,好嗎?」他沒有回答就走了。

1st Attempt: I told him, "You promised to lend me ten dollars. Can you give it to me now". He did not reply and left.

Question: What does this term mean and when is it used? Is it an archaic expression that has held on in written form, but is no longer spoken? I have never heard it used in a Hong Kong conversation, but I do not know how else to translate it!

As always you are welcome to comment on other parts of the sentence, as well.

塊 is the counter for money, as is 元. They mean the same thing.
毛 is also the same counter as 角

二十塊五毛 is more colloquial than 二十元五角. The former is actually preferred by most people in mainland China.

元、塊 e.g. 十元钱 十块钱 ¥10.00
角、毛 e.g. 三角钱 三毛钱 ¥0.30
分 e.g. 二分钱 两分钱 ¥0.02

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Final rendering: I told him, "You promised to lend me ten yuan. Can you give it to me now". He did not reply and left. Acknowledgement: My thanks to wherestip and Jason Pang for their helpful remarks. Certainly it was nothing that they posted that caused the delay in my response. Simply the Tsong Kit website is targeted for Cantonese and Hong Kong learners, and I required time to verify their remarks with the local population. If I can find time, perhaps I will dedicate a special webpage to this discussion, but for the moment I have my hands full, and must be content with what I have provided below. Discussion: Please see http://homepage.mac.com/moogoonghwa/tsongkit/part2/II-10-g.html#s14 for further discussion. Also, thanks to anastasia, Zhuoqui, and Chinoise for their confirmatory contributions. My very best from the land of no mountains surrounded by sea on many sides. "

塊錢,是中国北方讲普通话的说法,在大陆还有用。这就象,“十文(蚊)錢”,只有讲Cantonese的人才会明白和会这么说,讲普通话的人不会这么用。
