English term

upwave/downwave

English Tech/Engineering Ships, Sailing, Maritime towing
The method permits determining the kinematic and mechanical characteristics of a structure towed either **downwave or upwave**.

Dear native speakers, I'm not sure that the asterisked words are the best choice here. Could you propose other terms for "along waves" and "against waves"? TIA

up-sea and down-sea do get some hits on Google

What do you think about the terms "upsea/downsea"?

upwave/downwave

These terms come originally from seafaring, as in this case. But the words are also used in economic now as upward and downward pressures (see web link 2).
You have to use these words. They are technical terms which refer to the different pressures from the water when a wave is pressured against an object (thus, upwave) or when a wave is flowing away from an object (thus, downwave). So it's not quite as simple as going with, or against the waves, although there is an element of that in it too. (See weblink 1)

agree Jo Macdonald : Nice one Bill. So being towed upwave is like literally up the wave, bow to the wave, and downwave with the stern to the waves?

into waves/with waves

is a possible option - assuming that along waves does not mean braodside to waves [very dangerous]

it could also be against the current or with the current if that is the real meaning
