German term

Galeniker

German to English Tech/Engineering Medical: Pharmaceuticals
This is an occupation in the pharmaceutical industry. I've found German web pages that say, for example "Galeniker heißen die Fachleute, die sich um den Look, also um die Größe, die Farbe und das Design echter Medikamente kümmern", or "Nach Phase eins kommen die Galeniker ins Spiel, welche eine Darreichungsform für den Wirkstoff auf Basis der Untersuchungsergebnisse von Phase eins entwickeln". But what are they called in English?

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Jul 9, 2005:
Scientist or Pharmacist? With the hint of "formulation ***ist" from Johanna and Gabrielle, I've been able to look for myself, and both terms seem to be used for this role by the pharma industry, but "scientist" more frequently. It must be to some extent a matter of taste or context. Can I award KudoZ points to both of you?
MMUlr Jul 9, 2005:
Have to apologize: It is NOT my intention to push for an answer! (against Kudoz rules, I know). I only wanted to response to your remark "...doesn't really answer my question" :-))
MMUlr Jul 9, 2005:
Oliver, see below, my favorite is "formulation scientist" (Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer ...). Here a better German information: http://www.abbott.de/content/e36/e52/e398/e486/index_de.html - it's far more than size, look, color ...
Non-ProZ.com Jul 9, 2005:
I had looked for Galeniker and therefore not found this. It's interesting but doesn't really answer my question.
MMUlr Jul 9, 2005:
Maybe you would like to look at this quite recent KudoZ discussion on the term Galenik: http://www.proz.com/kudoz/977081?float=1
Non-ProZ.com Jul 8, 2005:
Galenist? I already found "galenist" but its definition (follower of Galen) doesn't agree with the German definitions of Galeniker that I have quoted.

Sorry, meant \"formulation scientist\", of course (it was very late ...). Thanks, MMUlr!

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I've chosen this one because of its greater number of search-engine hits, though Johanna's translation is probably equally good in many cases. Thank you Gabrielle and Johanna."

formulation pharmacist

At some stage, a decision needs to be made about the dosage form(s) for the delivery of the drug (e.g. a tablet, a capsule or an injection). The formulation pharmacist is concerned with this important aspect of medicine design but the factors that determine which dosage form(s) is(are) to be used are many and involve marketing considerations as well as scientific considerations.

sorry the link above does not work. here\'s another one:
www.canadapharma.org/About_RxD/ Studentship/information_e.html , and googling for \"formulation pharmacist\" will yield some good results.

The above (English) job descriptions seem to match the description of the work a \"Galeniker\" typically does (based on Oliver\'s definition and several others I found, like this one:
