I was interpreting for a man from Mexico who was giving me a Report number: 2014-05-12-0022
But he said in Spanish 2014 jon or yon, not sure, 05 jon, 12 jon. When I tried to clarify he got very upset and said that I needed to learn Spanish and indicated that jone is "dash" or space. I may have to learn Spanish, but to me he was just a jerk. Is it true that jon means dash in Mexican Spanish? anyone?
Thank you
Tammy

Note from asker:
Exactly that is what I told him, do you mean guion, or raya? but he was adamant, and I thought that may be in Mexico there was such a word. But with all your answers I realized that he did not know what he was talking about. Thank you all for your answers, it was very helpful. |

Thanks Phil. He might just be sensitive about a perfectly normal Mexican accent.

: I live in Mexico and though I am not Mexican I can assure you that I have not heard any Mexican pronounce guión as Jon... He must have a very special pronounciation. Not normal Mexican accent. :)

Thanks Judith. Perhaps from coyboy movies, Mexican Spanish sounds less accented to me than most varieties :-)

Sounds like he might have been a mumbler, saying "guión," which is the actual word for "hyphen." I don't know that I would have caught that either, being that it's so unusual to use punctuation in speech. Anyway, whenever you work with the public, there will always be the occasional rude person. Just stay true to your own professionalism, and don't be afraid to be honest and ask for clarification when you don't know something. There is always something to learn!
