Músico y Banda

Spanish to English Other Cooking / Culinary Dessert
Very Urgent! Thanks.

I know 'músico' is pine nuts and raisins, but what's 'banda'?

I presume it's a play on 'musician and band' but what does the actual 'band' refer to?

Discussion

James A. Walsh Sep 23, 2010:
Not a type/brand of Moscatel, no I suggested that "banda" refers to an "accompaniment", which is the part Lisa was stumped with. I'm really not sure of my suggestion of "Musicians Dessert" (hence the low confidence level), but the main reason I posted was to let Lisa know that I think "banda" refers to an "accompaniment" in general.
Andy Watkinson Sep 23, 2010:
James. You suggested that Banda may refer to a type/brand of Moscatel? I didn't realise, sorry.
James A. Walsh Sep 23, 2010:
@Andy Em, that's almost exactly what I suggest in my answer below...
Andy Watkinson Sep 23, 2010:
Amazed Hi Lisa, firstly I'm amazed at the answers you're receiving - My condolences. ;-).
It occurs to me that as a "músico" is usually served with Moscatel, there may be a type of Moscatel called "Banda" (not that I've ever heard of one). Alternatively, "Banda" may well be the name of a similar strong drink as an accompaniment.
Rick Larg Sep 23, 2010:
Clearly (postre de) músico but I'm afraid the "banda" has me stumped too!
Lisa McCarthy (asker) Sep 23, 2010:
Hi all I know exactly what músico and banda are literally - but would you put this on a dessert menu? Would you have a clue what it was? :) Some form of entertainment to round off your meal? :)
Elizabeth Slaney Sep 23, 2010:
Just a guess The only thing that comes to mind is rice in some form, as in "arroz a banda" but I'd contact customer as it's impossible to guess. In Spanish too, they should explain what it is on the menu.
Lisa McCarthy (asker) Sep 23, 2010:
Hi Elizabeth, I mentioned 'dessert' in the category description - should have put it in the main text too :)
Elizabeth Slaney Sep 23, 2010:
Context Can you give us anything else? We're talking food....starter, main course, dessert??

Musician's Dessert and Accompaniment

Really not sure about this, as I've never heard of "postre de músico" to start with. However, having read the recipe in the first link below, it occurred to me that they might be referring to "accompaniment"; in the link below it is accompanied by dessert wine, for example.

agree Isamar : There are lots of sites where they mention this dessert served with a glass of sweet wine or Moscatel...I agree with you out of logic!

Musician and Band

"Banda" may mean both "musical band" or "criminal gang", as in a "banda de narcotraficantes".

Also, a "banda" is just a "bond", asi in a latex bond.

Hope it helps

:)
Peer comment(s):

disagree Andy Watkinson : A "Músico" is a typical dessert comprising assorted nuts, raisins etc.... accompanied by a fortified wine

musical group or musical band

The musician is usually the leading person in the band, the band is the rest of the group for example the drum players all of them together make up the musical band.

If you are using this for a recipe it will mean the rest of the ingredients that make up the whole. The músico would be the primary ingredients and the band would be the rest of the ingredients needed. All together from a group.
Example sentence:

musical group or musical band
