Japanese term
薬事・食品審議会医薬品第一部会
Japanese to English
Medical
Medical (general)
I am stuck with the 一部会 part. I am not sure if this is part of the name of the advisory group or referring to a meeting, e.g. first meeting.
This 薬事・食品審議会 is an advisory body to the Ministry of Health Labour and Welfare. (薬事・食品審議会: Pharmaceutical Affairs and Food Sanitation Council). If anyone is familiar with the new drug application process, please help!

first body/second body
As you can see from this reference:

it does not appear as though this is the "first meeting" of the council. I believe it seems as though there are two parts to the council. I found a different link on google that referred to a division of one of the other councils under the Pharmaceutical Affairs part into "two bodies". So while this is just speculation and a clue to offer you something to go on, I think maybe "first body of the Pharmaceutical..." might be sufficient.

Yk, hmm...that does make it sound more like a meeting. But looking at the link I gave you, the 第一部会 had numerous meetings held on many different dates. So it is hard to say for me as I am not completely familiar with the English titles. However, in this blog: http://blog.m3.com/yomayoi/20080225/1, this sentence is used:
厚生労働省が2月22日に開催した薬事・食品審議会医薬品第一部会において審議され。。。
and I believe that this could be interpreted as "On February 22, XXX was deliberated in the second body of the PAFSC, sponsored/organized by the Ministry..."
So maybe it does not have to be a meeting, still something like the "second body" seems possible to me. What do you think?

Note from asker:
Thank you so much Timothy. I did extra research based on the clues you gave me. I think you are right, it's not referring to a meeting. |
I just realized that the source document uses the word 開催。「 厚生労働省がXX月に開催した薬事・食品審議会医薬品第一部会」Would it be more likely to be a meeting now? |
OH... your last explanation was really helpful! Your sample translation works well no matter what this 会is. I now feel that it is used to mean both the body and the meeting of the body...The link was also very relevant to my topic. Thank you so much Timothy! |
