German term

meldepflichtig

German to English Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals
Still on the subject of medicinal drug safety. Meldepflichtig comes up time and again.

Meldepflichtige Nebenwirkungen
Meldepflichtige Risiken
Was ist meldepflichtig? etc

Meldepflichtige Krankheit = notifiable disease, but notifiable does not seem to be the favourite adverb in connection with adverse drug reactions or drug-related risks.

Of course I can say should/must/have to be reported or there is a reporting obligation for, but I wonder wheher there is anything as short and to the port in that respect as notifiable is with diseases.

Discussion

Tom Tyson May 30, 2010:
In horticulture at least (!) the term is notifiable - a notifiable disease must be reported. Reportable suggests you can report it if you like, no obligation.
Hermeneutica May 29, 2010:
@Wen: reportable connotes both something capable of being reported and also something to be reported
Marga Shaw May 29, 2010:
@ Wen Meldepflichtig = reportable, notifiable (according to "Der Kleine Eichborn", Deutsch-Englisch).
Wendy Streitparth May 29, 2010:
I don't feel that reportable conveys the Pflicht and so think the longer version (which have to be reported) is better.

This report was developed to help policy makers develop, refine, and clarify mandatory reporting systems and potentially to compare their data nationally. The guide includes a comparison of the National Quality Forum’s (NQF) list of serious reportable events to existing state reporting systems and discusses further steps recommended by states to support the use and consistent implementation of the NQF list.

Since the NQF promulgated this list of serious reportable events in 2002, several States and other entities have enacted legislation or taken administrative action to require reporting of these “never events.”

The Phase I Committee reviews the performance of Phase I trials on a weekly basis;
reportable adverse events are reported to the DSTC. The Phase II Committee reviews the
performance of Phase II trials on a quarterly basis; serious adverse events and reportable
adverse events are reported to the DSTC.

Any woman whose pap is reported back as abnormal should be asked to return for followup diagnostic efforts/treatment until the matter is resolved. Pap smears are pretty much without reportable risks.

oops, I just saw that this is not about reporting a disease, but about drug reactions, so compulsory might be a bit too strong...
Peer comment(s):

neutral Hermeneutica : "mandatory" is probably what you were looking for
