German term

ab der zweiten Lebenswoche

German to English Medical Medical (general) dose recommendations
Opinion wanted: does this mean from the second week of life in the sense that the child is over 1 week old, or does it simply mean "over 2 weeks old", in that this is counting from the end of the second week of life?

Discussion

EACK (asker) Oct 10, 2007:
Context and additional info This is from the dose recommendations in a summary of product characteristics:

Kinder, Kleinkinder und Saeuglinge ab der zweiten Lebenswoche erhalten im Allgemeinen eine Tagesdosis von 150 mg pro kg Koerpergewicht, aufgeteilt in Einzeldosen alle 6 bis 8 Stunden.

However, I have just found the answer in the subsequent text:

Neugeborene erhalten in der ersten Lebenswoche 75 mg pro Kg Koerpergewicht pro Tag.

That means the other infants are over 1 week old.
Dr. Fred Thomson Oct 10, 2007:
You really need to give us at least the full sentence in which this appears and preferably some additional information as well.

infants over one week of age

Die 2. Lebenswoche beginnt, nachdem die erste abgeschlossen wurde. Ein 8 Tage altes Baby befindet sich demnach in seiner 2. Lebenswoche, auch wenn es dann noch keine 2 Wochen alt ist.
Example sentence:

the authors concluded that current pediatric dosing recommendations for linezolid (...) could be applied to infants over one week of age.

Peer comment(s):

agree Cilian O'Tuama : that would be "in der 2. Woche" not "ab" - from the second week onwards//Scuse me, even before you get a chance to comment, but let me change that disagree to agree. I jumped the gun. It probably does mean after the beginning of the second week.

From the context, it appears that "beginning with the second week of life" would be the correct translation.

two weeks after birth

"Saugelinge ab der zweiten Lebnswoche " implies two weeks after birth.
Peer comment(s):

agree milinad : although other two answers are also possible but birth brings more clarity to the sentence than the word life

disagree Judith Lang : ab der 2. Lebenswoche means 1 week after birth

neutral Cilian O'Tuama : infants more than two weeks of age was my instinctive thought too but, on inebriated reflection, I now agree with JL.
