What is the proper English term for the "benefactor" who is to provide the financial backing specified in a letter of comfort? In the text I'm looking at, the benefactor is not the parent company of a subsidiary, so I can't use "parent company".

No, it's not an English monolingual question. The German text I am translating contains the term "Patron", as in "...die von xxx abgegebene Erklärung ist als sogenannte 'harte Patronatserklärung' zu werten, durch die der Patron rechtlich durchsetzbare Pflicht übernimmt, xxx mit ausreichender Liquidität auszustatten..."

Guarantor

Zahn Bank- und Börsenwesen offers "guarantor" for "Patronatsgeberin" and "Patronin" (I guess they're assuming that the guarantor is a company). This seems to meet your context (btw, the more context you put in your question, the more likely you are to get an answer :-)

Langenscheidt proposes "founder", perhaps it simply means "owner, proprietor" or such like here??

A Patronatserklärung is apparently very specific to German law, as you probably already know. Schäfer provides a fairly extensive explanation of the term, and gives 'issuer of a letter of comfort' as the translation of 'Patron'.
