sawing of core samples
A "carotte" is a cylindrical length of rock retrieved from a "core barrel", a hollow, diamond-tipped drill used for investigative purposes. If the sample is intact, then it's very sound rock. It may need to be sawn into shorter lengths or into slices for laboratory testing of its physical properties, mineralogical identification, etc.
