English term

retrieves (context)

English Tech/Engineering Computers (general)
[vendor instructing sale force to sale backup and data recovery software]

"So a good opening question when your customer is purchasing storage or rolling out a new application, is how are you going to secure that data?
Are you going to be doing backup and restores and archives and ***retrieves***?"

...I think "retrieves" refers to data retrieve operations, anyway, for me it's just logical that a company would want to retrieve data they store...why would they want to ask this??

the retrieval of archived data is not always necessary

Some data are needed to be kept (stored) but may never be required again. Unlike online data (always necessary as transactional data) or nearline data (very likely to be available on demand, not not very often), the archived (backed up) data may not be needed at all.

Also, there are backups just "for a case" (a measure of security to recreate destroyed data if necessary). Such backups also may be just reserved copies never used to restore the system.

The modern practice is usually to keep such archives on tapes, not on hard drives.

So, there are at least two types of offline data which are often stored as archives but rarely needed to be retrieved:

1) backup copies (as a measure of security for a case of data losses);

2) old data kept for compliance reasons (say, records on cancelled bank cheques or old medical images)

agree RHELLER : for data searches, because if the answer is yes, they may save the data/organize the data in a way which is easier to retrieve

yes, For a simple backup CDs may also be used, but if there is a certain demand for the archived data retrieval, they need a tape to keep the data at hand
