- Mikropłatności to płatności elektroniczne zawierane na niewielkie, czasem nawet kilkugroszowe kwoty. W praktyce biznesowej nie ma jednej, ścisłej definicji mikropłatności, a górna granica ich wartości jest ustalana arbitralnie przez poszczególnych dostawców – zwykle jednak zamyka się w kwocie ok. 10–25 USD10. Oprócz wartości transakcji, wyróżnikiem mikropłatności jest to, że zwykle dotyczą one zakupu towarów lub usług cyfrowych – jak dostęp do artykułu, muzyki lub filmu – które otrzymuje się natychmiast po dokonaniu płatności. Właśnie czas realizacji płatności, a nie np. jej koszt ma największe znaczenie w przypadku mikropłatności. Zwykle zawierane są one za pomocą tzw. „jednego kliknięcia”11. Inną zaletą mikropłatności – zarówno z punktu widzenia sprzedającego jak i kupującego jest to, że klient – z reguły, w czasie dokonywania płatności nie opuszcza strony internetowej sklepu. Jest to szczególnie ważne, np. dla uczestników gier sieciowych, w których do-kupienie dodatkowych usług nie wymaga przerwania rozgrywki. Dokonany w ten sposób zakup jest bardziej impulsywny, na czym z kolei korzystają sprzedający.

Można - oczywiście - zakrzyknąć, że chodzi o dojenie nas z pieniędzy, ale moja wiara w ludzi jest na trochę wyższym poziomie i nie wierzę, że większość z nas uważa, że jesteśmy do czegokolwiek zobligowani. Jasne, chciałbym, aby gry były tańsze, a mikropłatności nie było wcale, ale nikt nas nie zmusza ani do grania, ani do kupowania w grach czegokolwiek. - komputerswiat by mike23
