            • Derating can be defined as "the practice of limiting electrical, thermal and mechanical stress on parts, in a given design application, to levels that are below their specified ratings or their proven capabilities in order to enhance reliability". Reducing these stresses extends part life and usually, but not always (depending upon the nature of the part and the specific parameter involved) improves part reliability and hence system reliability. In addition, derating helps protect parts from unforeseen application anomalies and overstresses. Derating is a structured engineering approach to part application tailored to deal with, among other things, part variability. All parts do not have the same "strength." Part "strength" variability within any given population of parts is a fact of life and derating helps to compensate for this variability. Even parts from a so-called homogenous population, the same production line and from the same "production lot" exhibit some parameter variability. When so-called "interchangeable parts" are supplied by different manufacturers, possibly using different internal circuitry and different manufacturing processes, this parameter variability can be expected to become even greater.
