Bio
I'm an American who has been living in Brazil since 1980. I came originally as a missionary and have been a fulltime translator/interpreter since 1990, when I came to live in the Amazon Region.
I had a small company in Belém, called CONTACT TRADUÇÕES, which provides translation and interpreting services and rental of conference interpreting equipment.
I met my wife, Norma, almost as soon as I arrived in Brazil, and we have been married now for 26 years (since 1981). We have 09 children together and 01 grandchild (so far).
I also teach Bible classes in my home and translation-related subjects at a local private university.
My interest in my work and even my company is to provide means of support. I work to live and not live to work. I am quite interested in the well-being of my clients, and in fact, everyone that I meet in life. My higher interests are my family and community and the community of translators/interpreters in general.
As a translator, I have had experience both as an in-house translator (SIAMAZ/IDB; Amazonia Celular/TIW and CERPA) and freelancer. As an interpreter, I have participated as conference interpreter in hundreds of events, in Belem, throughout Brazil, South America (Ecuador, Colombia, Suriname) in Europe (England, France, Belgium, Germany and Italy) and the USA. I have worked extensively as a liaison interpreter for multilateral organizations and multinational corporations throughout the Amazon and also accompanying government officials from Brazil abroad. As I live and work in the Amazon, I have also learned to be a 'fixer' for investigative reporters and filmmakers coming to the region. I accepted a position as a UN staff translator/interpreter in 2008 and am currently deployed with UNMIT - United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste, working with the Serious Crimes Investigation Team (SCIT).
My work with SCIT ended in July 2013. Since then I have been living in Bali, Indonesia - attending the Timorese market for Portuguese-English translations and interpreting.
I have also shuttled back and forth among countries - the US, East Timor and Indonesia on conference interpreting assignments.
I am currently seeking fulltime employment as a translator, interpreter or project manager. As I have not settled permanently, I can deploy anywhere in the world.
Currently, I am based in Sacramento, CA.
