Chiamato anche Dottore in Igiene Dentale o Dottore della prevenzione delle patologie del cavo orale, è quel professionista laureato che si occupa della prevenzione sanitaria in tutte le sue forme, soprattutto della prevenzione delle malattie della bocca ma che ha anche compiti di clinico nell’attuare, insieme alle altre figure dell’équipe odontoiatrica, piani preventodontici, di trattamento, di riabilitazione e di estetica orale.

Ed ora un po’ di storia
La storia delle professioni che interessano in modo particolare la salute del cavo orale nasce in America a Baltimora nel 1839 quando viene istituita la prima Scuola Universitaria di Odontoiatria permettendo così l’indipendenza dell’Odontoiatria dalla medicina generale.In Italia, sullo stesso versante dell’odontoiatria, anche se non esiste ancora una scuola appositamente strutturata, nel 1890 viene emanato un Decreto Legge che sancisce la “Cura dei denti e della bocca”. E l’igienista dentale? Ebbene, sempre negli Stati Uniti d’America, a Bridgeport, viene fondata dal padre dell’igiene dentale, la prima scuola con questa specificità. Nel suo primo libro Guida per i nuovi Igienisti Dentali, Alfred C. Fones, rende evidente il ruolo di educatore teso al miglioramento della salute orale nella popolazione. In Italia dobbiamo aspettare il 1976 quando con determinazione ma purtroppo senza un riconoscimento giuridico, la Regione Molise sovvenziona un primissimo corso biennale in materia di Igiene dentale, seguito poi dalla prima Scuola Diretta a fini Speciali che nasce a Bari nel 1978 dando così inizio a un lungo percorso di ricerca del riconoscimento della professione da parte delle istituzioni nazionali. Finalmente, il 15 marzo 1999 con il Decreto Ministeriale 137, viene istituita la professione di Igienista Dentale con un corso di Laurea specifico che porterà la figura dell’Igienista Dentale sulla scena delle professioni sanitarie diventando una realtà necessaria per il suo ruolo a 360° nell’educazione alla salute e al benessere generale della persona.

The dental hygienist knows how to professionally handle any type of patient ensuring continuous support and offers assistance in achieving and maintaining total well-being. A wide range of customized performances distinguishes the dental hygienist: the accurate collection of anamnestic data; the intraoral and extraoral exam of the oral cavity to identify early alteration in normal tissues; the oral hygiene instructions; the motivation; the dental charting or the method of recording the conditions of the oral cavity; prevendontic treatments of pit and fissure sealant to prevent the development of dental caries; a periodontal evaluation to make a treatment plan that best meets the needs of a specific patient; the debridement or the removal of sub-gingival and/or supra-gingival diseased tissues; scaling i.e. the removal of sub-gingival and/or supra-gingival bacterial plaque and tartar; the root planning, involving smoothing the root surfaces of the teeth; teeth whitening treatments; remineralization and desensitization treatments; polishing of teeth; professional oral hygiene of teeth and mucosa; sanitation of the fixed and removable artificial appliances that replace missing teeth; professional advice and treatment of oral halitosis. The dental hygienist uses his knowledge and integrity to provide these services. He uses a variety of hand instruments, active substances and latest generation equipment such as laser, light-emitting diodes, VELscope, halimeter, oral irrigators, Air-Flow system, etc.
The dental hygienist offers advice on homecare dental aids; he evaluates if a teeth whitening treatment is suitable for a patient, to bring teeth back to their natural colour and make them shine like diamonds.
And now a little bit of history
The history of the medical professions, especially related to oral health, began in America when the first institution of its kind in the world, The Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, was established in 1839. This gave Dentistry the chance to be independent from general practice. Italy had not yet similar schools but in 1890 a Law Decree was issued - "The care of the teeth and mouth". And about the dental hygienist? The Father of Dental Hygiene founded the world’s first School of Dental Hygiene in Bridgeport, Connecticut. In his first book “Mouth Hygiene; A Text-Book for Dental Hygienists” Alfred C. Fones made clear his vision for the important role of dental hygienists in improving people’s oral health In Italy we had to wait until 1976 when the Molise region, with no legal recognition, fund the first-ever two-year course in Dental Hygiene, followed then by the first “Scuola Diretta a fini Speciali” born in Bari in 1978. This would then start a long journey in the search of recognition of the profession by national institutions.
Finally, on March 15, 1999 the Ministerial Decree 137 established the profession of dental hygienist with a specific degree course that brought it to the fore of the health professions. Since then, dental hygienists have played a vital overall role in health education and the well-being of people.

Since 1981 I have been working as a sales and technical assistant for a stainless steel company.
One of my jobs is the translation of general and specialized texts (e.g. customer’s specification) in Italian <> French and Italian <> English.
