Source text - English We’ve had the top of the line Raven 1.0 from Focus and ridden and raced it extensively. To say we got on famously with it would be an understatement. We were very excited, then, to see whether the entry level 4.0 model – which uses the exact same carbon frame as its more expensive sibling – could light our fire in a similar way.
Ride & handling: Comfortable, aggressive and versatile
The shape of the bike places you squarely between the wheels, a sensation helped by the relatively slack front end. We found climbing on the Raven particularly satisfying, with only the very minimum of body language required to coax traction from the 2.2in Continental X-Kings on slippery bits.
The 100mm Fox 32 Float Evo fork juts out purposefully at a slack (for this kind of bike) 70 degrees, promising high speed, loose ground handling that won’t twitch and jack knife you into every tree.
The Climb, Trail, Descend settings on the fork help with quick switches of damping characteristics, and the bike even has guides for remote dropper posts – Focus clearly believe the Raven bike should be in the high mountains, both climbing and descending on fast, meaningful trails.
Once over the top of the mountain – or hill – it’s a simple case of flicking the CTD switch to Descend, easing back and letting the bike roll. It has an natural ability, somehow, to stick you onto the right line.
The Raven has a ride that lets you forget you’re on a 29er, or that it’s aimed at any particular sub-genre of riding – at heart it’s just a great-handling mountain bike that lets you be a mountain biker. You might be laying down fast laps of a 24-hour endurance race or hike-a-biking a rocky, high mountain trail in the Lakes, but the Raven will inspire you.
Frame & equipment: Sexy to look at, with a good fork
The Raven has some of the most extreme frame shaping we’ve seen on a dirt rig. The seatstays are wide but so flat you have to double check they’ve not been deformed in some autoclave accident…
More importantly, the design lets them work life leaf springs, and the Raven is the most bump-absorbing setup we’ve ridden. It gives the feeling of having 10-15psi less in the rear tyre than you do. You feel the benefit most over square-edged bumps, but the effect is working all the time, allowing you to remain seated and concentrate on pedalling.
The front end is a mix of a fat down tube and a flat top tube mated to a tapered-steerer compatible front end that promises laser-guided accuracy.
We wanted a shorter stem and to lose the conical upper headset cover to achieve a more trail aggro fit, but that’s it for complaints. We’d abscond with the Raven given half a chance.
Did we just gush over the Raven 4.0? Good, as this bike is worth it. It seems to find the best in your riding and amplify it, making the most of your skills and delivering a ride you’ll want to repeat as soon as you possibly can.

Le funzionalità Climb, Trail e Descend della forcella, aiutano a regolare velocemente il livello di ammortizzamento e ci sono addirittura passacavi per reggisella a controllo remoto. È chiaro che Focus ha progettato la Raven per essere utilizzata in alta montagna, sia per la salita che la discesa su terreni ripidi.
Una volta raggiunta la cima, basta semplicemente spostare il selettore CTD su Descend, mettersi comodi e lasciare che la bici faccia il resto. La Raven sembra possedere un’innata abiltà nel mantenervi sul tragitto giusto.
Dimenticherete di montare una 29 pollici, o che questa sia una bici mirata ad un particolare sotto stile di guida, perché la Raven rimane essenzialmente una mountain bike di estrema maneggevolezza fatta per mountain bikers. Che stiate mettendocela tutta in una gara di resistenza a 24 ore, o che siate impegnati in un’escursione tra sentieri rocciosi di montagna, la Raven vi ecciterà.
Telaio ed attrezzatura: Sexy e con una buona forcella
La Raven ha uno dei telai più estremi che abbiamo mai visto su una bici da dirt. I foderi posteriori verticali sono larghi ma allo stesso tempo talmente piatti che vi verrà il dubbio siano stati deformati da un incidente in autoclave...
Cosa ancora più importante, il design fa in modo che questi si comportino come molle a balestra, facendone della Raven una delle bici più ammortizzate che abbiamo mai provato. Vi sembrerà di avere circa 1bar in meno nel copertone posteriore. Lo noterete soprattutto nell’affrontare dossi spigolosi, ma quest’effetto si fa sentire spesso, dandovi così la possibilità di restare seduti e concentrarvi sulla pedalata.
La parte anteriore del telaio è formata da un robusto tubo obliquo e un tubo orizzontale piatto che finiscono in un tubo di sterzo affusolato dalla precisione di guida a raggio laser.
Preferiremmo una pipa più corta e avremmo potuto fare a meno della guarnizione conica per la serie sterzo superiore ottenendo così un’andatura più aggressiva su terreni aperti, ma queste sono le uniche pecche. Saremmo fuggiti con la Raven ne avessimo avuto la possibilità.
Troppe sviolinate per una Raven 4.0? No, questa bici le vale tutte. Sa tirare fuori il meglio di voi, sfruttando al massimo le vostre capacità e regalandovi un’esperienza di guida che vorrete ripetere il prima possibile.

In Gina’s home there is a picture, a panoramic view of Assisi of ancient city walls, bell towers, pink and sandy yellow roof tops, the pink and white stone of old houses, churches, convents and monasteries, the narrow slits between the buildings are the medieval streets that open out into piazzas. There is the fortress like structure of the Basilica of San Francesco down on the left and the real castle at the top of the city, a little detached from the line of the upper houses. All is in perspective against the background of Mount Subasio. But in the foreground of the picture, disproportionately large, slightly to one side and on a different plain, looking in on the city like an outsider, an observer, there is a profile self portrait of Peter, the artist. The painting is signed and dated 1939.
Immediately after Anna died, the family decided that Gina should have the painting as it was she who had volunteered to take in the baby, Francesca. Years and years later, when Francesca returned to that house, she recognized the picture with the man she had been told was her father.
This is primarily Peter’s story, as he painted it—himself, Assisi and Mount Subasio. But beyond the limitations of the frame there is the Europe of 1938-39 and Assisi is made up of people and Mount Subasio is a wide open space on top of the world.
In Assisi there is a legend that the Saracens hid a piece of magnetic black stone in the People’s Tower of the Piazza Comune when the tower was being built. It was a stone to hold the city’s inhabitants spiritually close by it for ever, including those who wanted to leave and those who, like Franco, actually did so. Certainly Gina, Clair, Anna, Fausto and Peppe could never have survived far from the sound of the tolling of the tower bell. Their families for centuries had lived in the same houses, prayed in the same churches. The buildings of Assisi belonged to these people; the people belonged to the buildings. All their family births, marriages and deaths had taken place here within sound of that bell and generations of ancestral bones had accumulated in the little cemetery just outside the city walls.
But according to the legend, the Saracens’ black stone also attracted from afar, madmen, saints and sinners. Whether mad or not, it was certain that throughout the centuries, others besides pilgrims came to worship, to do penance and ask for help at the tomb of St. Francis. There were always less pious visitors as well; people whose lives were in a void, who had no anchorage of domestic complacency, like the abandoned French woman looking for a substitute for her husband and Paolo needing a wife. Some people had no idea what they were searching for at all. Peter was looking for himself, though he didn’t really know it to begin with, but for him the attraction was different. The magnet was only partially in the city of Assisi. An even stronger force was pulling him above and beyond, to the very top of Mount Subasio. He was just twenty two years old when he first felt that force, compelling him to cross the valley from Perugia, compelling him to climb the mountain.

A casa di Gina c'è un quadro: una vista panoramica su Assisi, con le antiche mura della città, i campanili, l’ocra dei tetti, il bianco e rosa delle pietre delle vecchie case, le chiese, i conventi e i monasteri. Le strette fessure tra gli edifici sono le vie medievali che si aprono su ariose piazze. In basso a sinistra, c’è la Basilica di San Francesco, la cui struttura ricorda un forte e in cima alla città, un po’ distante dal limitare delle ultime case, c’è la fortezza vera e propria, il castello. Sullo sfondo domina il Monte Subasio. Tutto è in proporzione, ma in primo piano, leggermente di lato e volutamente più grande, spicca il profilo di un uomo che osserva la città come uno spettatore fuori campou è l’autoritratto di Peter, l'artista. Il dipinto è firmato e datato 1939.
Subito dopo la morte di Anna, la famiglia decise che il quadro spettava a Gina. Era lei che si era offerta di prendersi cura della piccola Francesca. Anni più tardi, quando Francesca era tornata in quella casa, aveva riconosciuto la tela con quell'uomo che dicevano fosse il suo vero padre.
Questa è prima di tutto la storia di Peter dipinta da lui stesso, è la sua esperienza ad Assisi e sul Monte Subasio; ma oltre i confini della cornice che racchiude questo quadro, c'è l'Europa del 1938 – 1939, c’è Assisi con i suoi abitanti e c’è il Monte Subasio, quel grande spazio aperto in cima al mondo.
Ad Assisi una leggenda narra che i Saraceni nascosero una pietra nera dai poteri magnetici all’interno della Torre del Popolo. Questa pietra avrebbe tenuto gli abitanti spiritualmente legati alla città per sempre, sia quelli che ci vivevano, sia quelli che desideravano andarsene e poi c’erano quelli che, come Franco, riuscirono ad allontanarsi. Quel che è certo, è che Gina, Chiara, Anna, Fausto e Peppe non avrebbero mai potuto vivere lontano dai rintocchi della sua torre campanaria. Per secoli le loro famiglie avevano vissuto nelle stesse case e pregato nelle stesse chiese. Gli edifici di Assisi appartenevano a queste persone e le persone appartenevano agli edifici. Nascite, matrimoni e decessi erano avvenuti lì, non lontano dal suono di quella campana e generazioni di ossa si erano accumulate nel piccolo cimitero appena fuori le mura della città.
Ma, sempre secondo la leggenda, quella pietra attraeva anche santoni, pazzi e peccatori. Vero o no, è certo che nel corso dei secoli, i pellegrini non furono gli unici ad arrivare per pregare, fare penitenza o chiedere aiuto davanti alla tomba di San Francesco. 12. Queste organizzazioni esistono non solo per la grande quantita’ di quattrini che sono in grado di muovere e di far fruttare, ma anche per il sistema culturale di relazioni e di intricati legami che sono in grado di mantenere su tutto il territorio nazionale.
13. Quando ragioniamo in termini Mafiosi tutto sta dentro, tutto sta all’interno, in qualche modo siamo rivolti sul dentro e non sul fuori. La logica della lealta’, dell’affezione alla famiglia, alle regole interne che la reggono e’ una delle caratteristiche. Forse la caratteristica principale. Quindi quello che sta fuori, e’ il nemico, quello che sta fuori e’ sbagliato, quello che sta fuori e’ quello che non si conforma alla regola reggente ed e’ per questo che tendenzialmente viene allontanato. Viene vissuto come potenzialmente minaccioso.

Quella di Lea Garofalo, è la storia di una donna che ha voluto opporsi alle logiche criminali della ndrangheta, e per questo ha pagato con la vita.

Lea ha la sfortuna di nascere all'interno di una famiglia malavitosa, appartenente alla criminalita' organizzata calabrese, e trascorrera' la sua vita, fino a trentacinque anni in realta' della sua morte, cercando di affrancarsi, e di reagire, in alcune volte anche in maniera violenta, rispetto alle imposizioni cosi' rigide da parte di un sistema come quello della malavita organizzata.

Lea Garofalo nasce in Calabria a Petilia Policastro, nasce in una famiglia la cui aderenza al sistema andranghetistico era piu’ che evidente, lei fin da subito ha un dissidio col sistema familiare in cui e’ nato un dissidio che all’inizio si traduce forse nel modo piu’ semplice e naturale per una ragazza di quell’eta’ di rompere i legami familiari. Si traduce nella scelta di un fidanzato in viso alla famiglia.
