Translation - English Development of Container Shipping
It is thought that the maiden deep sea voyage of a container vessel was the voyage of the "Maxton" with a load of 60 containers from New York to Houston in the year 1956. Who was the first to brave crossing the Atlantic can not clearly be established. Supposedly in the spring of 1966 the Moore-Mac-Cormac-Lines shipped the first 40 ft container as "Army Cargo" to Germany.
As concerns commercial shipping, is is generally thought that Sealand with their vessel "Fairland" was the American shipping company who first crossed the Atlantic carrying containers. Several other American shipping companies followed and the Europeans, alsok caught up sooner than expected. The container conquered the North Atlantic with breathtaking speed.

Experience
Years of experience: 39. Registered at ProZ.com: Jun 2010.
Born and raised in Westphalia, Germany, I moved to London in 1976 after having passed my first qualification as Medical Assistant/Secretary.
The Cambridge Proficiency Exam was followed by short stints in retail and gastronomy before I started my insurance career at the City underwriting office of a major French insurance company, now merged with AXA.
My translation work began in 1985 at the London office of the Gerling Konzern, one of the most prestigious German insurance group of companies (now for the most part merged with HDI).
After 14 years of living and working in London I returned to Germany to take up a post at the head office in Cologne. I passed the advanced insurance qualification of Versicherungsfachwirt, specialising in Marine Insurance.
Over 30 years of working in the insurance industry provided the welcome opportunity to gain knowledge in numerous subjects:
*economics
*finance
*law
*marine/aviation/liability/property insurance
*HR
*communication
*French & Italian (by servicing the branches in Strasbourg, Paris and Milan)
Buying reinsurance coverage internationally, negotiating large reinsurance claims, drafting contracts and translating demanding texts into English provided a satisfying challenge.
Addicted to learning, I had a go at some more languages: Dutch, Spanish and Turkish (just for fun!)
For some years I also taught Business English at the local VHS (adult education centre) in the evening and participated in a one-year (week-end/evening) course for foreign language lecturers at the VHS.
In preparation of the intended freelance translation career I acquired the "University Diploma in Business English" (Akademisch gepr. Wirschaftskorrespondentin Englisch (HFWU)) at the Nuertingen University in the summer of 2009. Next year I intend to take the examination as state-certified translator as evidence of my translation skills gained in so many years of working in the English language.
