Source text - English For the EUR, the price action yesterday was relatively encouraging with a push above 1.29 at one stage, the tone aided by solid demand at the Irish and Spanish auctions and the improved performance by equities. Ireland sold €500m of 2014 paper at a bid/cover of 5.4 times, and €1bn of 2020 at a bid/cover of 2.4 and a yield of 5.386%. Ireland needs to raise a net €15bn next year, according to the NTMA. Spain sold €4.34bn of 12m bills at 1.836% with a bid/cover of 2.47 times, and €1.17bn of 18m bills at 2.078%. The spread of both Irish and Spanish bond yields to Bunds narrowed significantly across the curve, by more than 10bp in both instance. The ZEW economic sentiment index, which fell to 14.0 for August from 21.2 in the previous month, was essentially ignored. Some healthy buying by large central banks of EUR/GBP and EUR/CHF gave the single currency some underlying momentum, as well as some trader short-covering. However, the euro had since drifted back, now 1.2840.
