Source text - Italian Edificare sottraendo
Se è così, edificare sarebbe, all’inizio, sottrarre.
Translation - English Building by subtracting
It has often been said Botta’s constructions are monolithic blocks, which have been inflicted by deep wounds in the great fissures that function as windows and skylights. Monolithic blocks, with lacerated voids caused by the subtraction of matter. I wonder if the logic that leads to that result does not take the opposite route. I wonder if the first idea, the conceptual nucleus from which Botta departs, is not instead the void; if it is from there and not from the solid that he starts to organize the space at this disposal. The famous question of the missing doors, of absent dividing walls (that are becoming a commonplace of the reserves or of the self-righteous derision of his architecture) would find, in this perspective, an answer that is not forced. Those walls, those doors are missing because they were never there in the first place, not because they were eliminated. The reigning void does not want to let itself be cut to bits in such a banal way. He plays master to the extent that he dictates the rules of distribution so as to leave its supreme unity intact. The house of Adam, for Botta, at least in this initial phase, was not a straw roof, or a hut made with trunks fashioned so as to form a solid, the first human nest. Rather, it was the cave ideally brought into the open air, with a film around it, a thin wrapping that preserves his image and nature: the cavern in the positive, caves wrapped in furs. The openings that make grooves in his houses are thus not wounds inflicted on the compactness of the building, but rather natural crevices, underground passages, vents emerging into the sky after this hypothetical extraction from the cavern in the earth’s breast. If this is the way things are, building is, from the beginning, subtracting.
