This is puzzling. I've always seen "resolución de contrato" translated as "terminación of contract". But in a document I'm working on appear the words "terminación o resolución del contrato". At first I thought perhaps it refers to a distinction such as termination and rescission in English law. Now, as I began looking into this it turns out that in Chile there are various terms along these lines, resolución, resiliación, rescisión y terminación. I found a text written on these terms by a Peruvian law profesor containing references to Chile, one of which reads:
"Comentando el Código civil chileno, López Santa María dice: “El efecto de la resolución, acogida por sentencia judicial firme, es la desaparición retroactiva del contrato. Lo mismo ocurre cuando se pronuncia judicialmente la nulidad del contrato (artículos 1687 y 1689 del Código Civil): es como si el contrato nunca hubiese existido. De modo que si una de las partes había ya ejecutado su obligación, procede devolverle lo pgado (...) Pero si la resolución, que pasa a llamrse en este caso terminación afecta a un contrato de tracto sucesivo, no hay efecto retroactivo, operando la resolución únicamente para el futuro” (López Santa María, Jorge, Los contratos, parte general, Editorial Jurídica de Chle, 1986, p. 423).... En la doctrina chilena se denomina resiliación al mutuo disenso que es el acuerdo por el cual las partes dejan sin efecto un contrato (Lopez Santa María, Jorge, Los contratos, Parte general, Editorial Jurídica de Chile, 1986, pp. 233-234)."

My question is, if "terminación" is termination and "rescisión" is rescission, then what might "resolución", and for that matter "resiliación" refer to?
Reading that Peruvian text also reveals there to be subtle differences (and non-differentiations) between these terms in various Latin American countries.
I'll be grateful for any help you can offer, particularly our legal aces.

I believe this is an agreed discharge vs. a 'mutual repudiation' of contract that is a contradiction in terms, namely normally in EN law only one party is in repudiatory breach. No time to research further, but maybe another contributor may care to add non-facile comments.

terminación – The contract comes to a natural end (‘runs out’) in accordance either with the terms of the contract itself, or some relevant legal provision.
resolución – Something has gone ‘wrong’ with the execution of the contract, and there is nothing in the contract itself to determine how the problem should be resolved (eg: what are the penalties if one party stops payment?), and the parties cannot agree on the matter. The affected party takes the matter to court to get a judgement (resolución judicial); this will over-ride the terms of the contract and, if appropriate, decide (among other things) how assets bound up in the contract are to be distributed. resolución does not necessarily imply terminación of the entire contract; rather, it modifies the contract terms.
rescisión / resiliación – These terms are interchangeable. They are similar to resolución, above, except that the parties can agree on what should be done, so there’s no need to take it to a tribunal; however, rescisión does imply terminación.
