To Mikhail and Carol: I know we are all acutely aware of the fact that tenses in Russian are not as detailed as they are in English. The point of my answer was to offer up "shudder"; from the source it isn't clear if the horrors to which the speaker is referring aren't still happening, or aren't scheduled to happen, as a result of the absence of the savior to whom the statement is directed. Thus, I offered up a tense that's least complicated, with a complete ability to twist it up any way that the asker might choose based on the more complete context. The question wasn't about how to translate the tense, imho, and if it was - I will bow out respectfully.

I only try to offer up answers that might help find the right word or combination of words for the occasion, while everybody who hangs out here knows their p's and q's about tenses in English, I suspect. :)

This works, emphasises the 'be' verb, as it is in the Russian.
