Though the initial 3G hype focused on data, mobile operators are still mostly in the telephony business. Voice is the main reason why people buy cell phones, and it accounts for most of the carriers' revenue. According to Motorola, the average is currently over 90 percent, though this is predicted to fall to less than half by 2010. As a result, the first services that carriers run through 3G's data pipe will be enhancements to basic voice service, such as messaging, video, and various applications that attempt to converge voice and data.
