Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Nov 9, 2004:
I do think we should charge extra for slogans! Some of these take me as long as a long dokument.
Richard Benham Nov 9, 2004:
Do you demand extra for translating slogans? I think we all should!

agree Richard Benham : This is OK.

agree Natalie Chandler : Simple but effective - it really depends on the style you are going for

agree TonyTK : ... and I think it's important to use "a" rather than Richard's "the".

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I found this one difficult to grade, and would like to give Olaf and Richard points. But this one is exactly what my customer was looking for. Thanks to everyone, it was a great discussion. I think one should not grade slogans, because there is no right or wrong. It's a question of taste and style. I do think we should charge extra for slogans. "

This is advertising--no need to worry about niceties like definite vs indefinite articles.

Thanks.
agree silvia glatzhofer : agree also to charging extra for slogans.// I know, but what to tell customers who say "well, but you only say it in another language" or as a surprised customer once said to me "why is interpreting so expensive? all you do is TALK!"
36 mins
Thanks. I mean, you can spend hours working on a five-word slogan and get paid half a euro for it!//Yes. All surgeons do is cut people up and sew them back together again. The hard bit is knowing what to say or where to stick the knife!
agree writeaway : Bavarian to the eyeballs..... the hilt..... knee deep in knee slapping Bavarian authenticity-like quintessential (this is definitely better than boiled spuds :-) )
40 mins
Natalie seems to think "quintessential" is a little sophisticated.
agree Andrew D : where else would you meet hundreds of ossis easily beating any bavarian at their supposedly home domain?
44 mins
Maybe a few Aussies as well...even a former Australian prime minister used to hold a world record for beer-drinking.
neutral TonyTK : Surely overweight lager louts and boozed-up bimbos singing crap songs isn't quintessential Bavaria?! Sounds more like Essex.

The purpose of translation is not to tell the truth but to reproduce as accurately as possible the original lies in another language. I'll go anywhere where there are boozed-up bimbos, though.
agree Ulrike Lieder (X) : I do like the "quintessential" :-) Excellent suggestion!
