Spanish term
único (código único)

Peru - taxes
PERU. This appears in a list of tax details published by SUNAT. The term in question is "Código único concesión minera", which I would initially translate literally as "mining concession code". However, my issue is with the "único" component, because no matter where I try to insert either "unique" or single" into the translated phrase, I get no hits on Google, which would suggest that it doesn't exist as such in English usage.
So, my issue is basically whether I should just omit it, or try to maintain the "single/unique" component in the translation.
Código único concesión minera
No results found for "Unique mining concession code" / No results found for "Mining concession unique code" / "Single mining concession code".

ID code/number
By analogy with RUT = tax ID code/number

: Yes, definitely something along those lines; you never see "unique" or "sole" in this context in English. "Identifier" is also useful option for "(código/clave) único/a".

Comment: "My main query, about whether "unique" is common or necessary when translating these items (Cf. RUT/Registro UNICO... etc.), has been answered. Thanks again to everyone who chipped in on this."

sole (sole code)
I would include unique or sole
"Each investment project shall be granted a sole code which remains unchanged throughout its operation and shall not be granted to another project. The code of an investment project expires when the investment project terminates its operation."

With "sole" meaning "being the only one" (Merriam-Webster's 11th Collegiate Dictionary)
I agree with philgoddard: "... "unique code" would not be wrong, and gets lots of hits. I don't think you should be relying so much on Google - just because "unique mining concession code" doesn't get any hits doesn't mean it's incorrect :-)"

And if you google "sole code" "mining", you will find many hits.

It might be a pleonasm but "extra" words can sometimes be helpful to a speaker or writer in getting a message across, adding emphasis, or simply adding an appealing sound and rhythm to a phrase - as, for example, with the pleonasm "I saw it with my own eyes!" Pleonasms exist in English and Spanish and maybe the author did write the word "único" intentionally. Have a good day everybody.

: I just did what you suggest: Google 'sole code' ' mining'. And the first 20 results are from Angola (not an EN or ES-speaking country), or refer to footwear. Many hits? - yes. Many *relevant* hits? - no (in fact none).

It's the first aggressive or ironic answer I get on proz.com from another translator but it's ok. We are here to help.

I think we've probably had others too, but there are too many questions about 'único' to wade through.

I think you should leave it out, as it's redundant in English.

Note from asker:
I'm not "relying" on Google. I simply use it to see whether certain turns of phrase actually exist anywhere. It is also useful as an indicator of FREQUENCY OF USE, which I often apply as a rule of thumb when choosing between terms. |

: I do strongly agree with you. I would not assign a code unless it's 'único'. So leave it out.

Note use of unico art 19
Art. 20. – El REGISTRO CATASTRAL MINERO dependerá de la autoridad minera de cada jurisdicción y quedará constituido con la finalidad principal de reflejar la situación física, jurídica y demás antecedentes que conduzcan a la confección de la matrícula catastral correspondiente a cada derecho minero que reconoce este**** Código***.
Las provincias procurarán el establecimiento de sistemas catastrales mineros uniformes.

The word Codigo as usedn in Centro Ameria, is not reall the same as Code but more like the LEgal Legislation , the Subheading, Cahpter and Verse of the Law, on which you are applying to do your mining. If so the SINGLE CODE, may mean to declare under what part of the Legislation, Laws, Regulations, you are claining and make a petition for Titular de Concesion. not a patented mining claim but only a permiso, privilege.
https://www.sunat.gob.pe/legislacion/superin/2015/anexoD-357...
I'm not sure if this is the same thing but it seems to make sense. In this Peruvian Government (English version) 'Regulations for mining procedures' it refers to the "list of mining concessions whose titles had been granted during the immediately previous month". For each concession, it lists the following -
"a. Name of mining concession;
b. Single code;
c. Full name or corporate name of holder;
d. WGS84 UTM coordinates specifying the geodetic system of
the granted concession;
e. Code and name of mining petitions or concessions, whose
respect had been recorded on the title.
f. Number and date of Resolution granting the title."
It also explains why and how you must apply for your 'single code' for your concession. So, although it has been translated here as 'single code' I reckon it is more of a 'unique code' that is granted to each concession.
