English term

emptying the kitchen sink

English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Hello everyone,

Jimmy Connors, playing against Aaron Krickstein, did everything to slowdown the game.

A journalst describes it as follows:

New shoes, spraying the knee. Who knows what that does. That’s got to be really temporary. Water bottles I get. It was a hot day, but I don't think it was that hot. 66 times on the towel. That’s what I call emptying the kitchen sink.

I can't understand why he compares that to emptying the kitchen sink.

Could someone explain it please?

Thank you.

http://ftw.usatoday.com/2015/02/jimmy-connors-aaro This was the match that featured Connors boorishly revving up the crowd, dramatically taking breaks, yelling at the umpire and generally just living up to his locker-room reputation as a jerk before stealing a fifth-set tiebreak and making his historic run to the semifinals.
Darius Saczuk Dec 30, 2015:
No wonder. Connors was such a dirty player. He himself idolized Pete Rose, one of the biggest villains in the history of US sport. I'm pretty sure Krickstein still has nightmares about this game.
Charles Davis Dec 30, 2015:
What a lovely guy Apparently Connors and Krickstein were quite close before this match but barely spoke afterwards.
Darius Saczuk Dec 30, 2015:
It was Connors at his worst. That's why most fellow players hated him. Andre Agassi devoted quite a bit to Connors and his antics in his autobiography.
Charles Davis Dec 30, 2015:
More: hitting them hard: "“You have to go ahead and throw the kitchen sink at them now,” he said. “They’re going to get the kitchen sink. You guys have been writing about holding things back, well you won’t have to worry about that this week.”"

"Miller didn’t just empty the kitchen sink defensively. He threw in the family room and garage, too. He had future first-round NBA draft picks contesting shots from all depths and angles and it still wasn’t enough."

"The match itself featured a lot of good submission wrestling and Castagnoli eventually had to empty the kitchen sink to beat Hero in the end."

Darius Saczuk Dec 30, 2015:
Yes, Connors did everything to throw Krickstein off balance, to disrupt his rhythm. He toweled tens of times, bounced the ball incessantly before serving, took long breaks, etc. He used a whole bag of tricks to win this game not only physically but also mentally. He did manage to get to Krickstein's head.
Charles Davis Dec 30, 2015:
My point, really, is that although I intuitively guessed that the meaning must be "doing everything but the kitchen sink", trying every trick in the book, I think it's possible that the sense is "emptying the kitchen sink over" Krickstein, which is different: hounding him, persecuting him, aggressively and relentlessly undermining him. I didn't suspect this possible meaning, but I think it might be right.
Darius Saczuk Dec 30, 2015:
The problem is that LEMEON provided the bulk of her answer in French, and she did not explain what the original idiom and the term asked by the asker mean.
Charles Davis Dec 30, 2015:
A different sense here This one, about boxing, is interesting, because it seems to imply relentlessly persecuting the opponent, which is what Connors was doing to Krickstein:

"Estrada won only one round, the first, but traded 84 power punches with Berto in the third, and 94 in the eighth. Berto was relentless throughout, while emptying the kitchen sink all over Estrada. Estrada will be seeing jabs in his sleep for weeks"
http://rubberroomview.blogspot.com.es/2007_09_01_archive.htm...

Not sport here, but it seems to mean going to great lengths to attack or persecute people:

"Like I said, you might be right in your research but it is wrong to go about digging people and emptying the kitchen sink on thier faces especially if you are not 100% sure."
http://www.postnewsline.com/2008/12/ub-to-get-ict-exchange-p...

And one more, on American football:

"In his return trip to The Black Hole, Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson wasted no time emptying the kitchen sink on Cincinnati's first series of the season and then tight end Tyler Eifert supplied the hammer by establishing career highs of nine catches for 104 yards"

Charles Davis Dec 30, 2015:
Yes indeed And as he says, LEMEON deserves credit for being the first to identify the origin: this is a variant on the idiom "everything but the kitchen sink". It means trying everything you can think of.

Here is another very similar example, again from the US and again about sport (here basketball):

"It is hard to say Buzz Williams should have done something differently on Wednesday with the defense. He tried a press for awhile. He tried a zone. I mean Williams seemed to do everything besides emptying the kitchen sink."
http://snotap.blogspot.com.es/2014/02/marquette-misses-anoth...

Basketball again; here it seems to mean "going all out":
"JH: What is the argument for LeBron, at this point?
BS: The only argument for LeBron is a ceiling argument…that, if he’s going all in…if it’s like a Game 7, and he’s emptying the kitchen sink, his ceiling is higher than Steph Curry…

Connors used all possible tricks ( = "emptied the kitchen sink") to slow down the game, irritate Krickstein and throw him off balance etc. in order to prevail.

When you empty the kitchen sink, you use all means and resources at your disposal in order to reach your goal.

Take a look here:

NEW ENGLAND OFFENSE VS NEW YORK DEFENSE:

The Jets are going to empty the kitchen sink at Brady as Rex Ryan tries to pull the upset in his last-hurrah as head coach of the Jets. Look for amoeba fronts with every defender standing and moving and showing blitzes and backing out and then showing blitzes and coming at Brady with multiple rushers. The Jets will also use multiple alignments and linebackers, safeties, and cornerbacks to slow Rob Gronkowski: He had just five catches for 68 yards in week seven as seemingly every Jets defender had some role in covering him at some point.

Thank you, Noni.
agree Charles Davis : See discussion area: it may mean Connors was "emptying the kitchen sink all over" Krickstein, persecuting him, doing everything possible to wind him up. So your "irritate him" could be the real point.

tout ce qu'il possible de faire pour ...

it is derived from an idiom " Everything but the kitchen sink " : tout ce qu'il possible de faire pour .... retarder le jeu

Tried almost everything that you can imagine

It is humorous expression. By using this expression I think he meant that the tennis player have tried almost all that you can imagine ( did everything to slowdown the game). IT could be related to the idiom (everything but the kitchen sink)
Peer comment(s):

agree Frank Szmulowicz, Ph. D. : dug deep into his bag of tricks
