Description:

For some lawyer-linguists, their interests in both law and languages are expressed through a traditional law practice and the provision of translation and/or interpretation services. This panel discussion will include recommendations from lawyer-linguists who maintain active traditional law practices on how to balance both professions, including licensing, insurance and continuing education requirements, as well as marketing techniques.

Ms. Deliscar was called to the Ontario Bar in 2004. As principal of Suzanne E. Deliscar, Lawyer-Linguist, she focuses on matters involving both legal and language issues. Her practice was created through the combination of her language skills in French and Spanish and the practice of law in a variety of areas, including civil litigation, wills & estates, corporate/commercial, and family law.

Ms. Deliscar has extensive experience in the translation of a variety of legal documents. She has extensive experience in the translation of official documents, and has reviewed, analyzed and abstracted over 500 Spanish language contracts for a large multinational corporation. Ms. Deliscar is also experienced in providing document review in French.

Suzanne Deliscar is also the developer and presenter of over 13 popular translator training webinar programs in the areas of legal translation, official document translation, and marketing for translators and interpreters. She is also the founder of the Lawyer-Linguists Forum, an online community of lawyer-linguists which fosters discussion and exchange in an effort to improve awareness and growth of the profession.

Ms. Deliscar has been heavily involved in the community through her mission work in Haiti, as well as holding various positions locally, regionally, nationally and internationally within her church community. Ms. Deliscar has also hosted numerous “Ask the Lawyer” Days in banks and for community organizations.

    DEBORA KAYEMBE is a Barrister from Democratic Republic of Congo, who did pro bono work for victims of domestic abuse and work as a Human Right Lawyer. She is a lawyer and interpreter at the international Criminal Court at the Hague. She is currently working as a freelance linguist in which she is qualified for 5 languages. She is a qualified paralegal in civil court practice in Scotland.
    Marta Cerdan Bonnemaison
    I am a Spanish lawyer-linguist with a B.A. in law (five years) and a Master's Degree in European Community Law and Comparative Law. I speak five languages (Spanish, English, French, Catalan and German) though my working languages are Spanish, English and French.

    Since 2003 I have been providing trilingual legal advice, with the occasional Catalan and German thrown in, as in-house counsel for a large hotel company, and starting in January 2012 as a freelance legal practitioner, most recently at the law firm Bufete Capellà in Palma de Mallorca.

    Furthermore in 2008 I became a sworn translator-interpreter (Spanish-English, direct and reverse) by appointment of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I specialise in legal translation, also on the language pair Spanish-French (non-certified, direct and reverse).

    My practice is based in Spain, with a strong emphasis on international investment, corporate and hospitality law, contracts and private international law. Furthermore I have ample experience in multinational transactions, litigation and supervision of external counsel, as well as in real estate/stock purchases, including the incorporation and management of complex corporate structures.

    I have also coordinated multiparty negotiations with investors, joint venture partners and financial and governmental institutions at the highest level in preparation of large investment projects, all of which have given me ample experience and resources that I also apply to my translations. Such projects also require an extensive follow-up in order to obtain licences and permits, tax exemptions when available, assist in the establishment of local offices, hire staff and comply with local laws and regulations.

    Thanks to my training in comparative law, language skills and legal expertise in the Caribbean, Central and South America, the USA, Northern Africa, Eastern Mediterranean and Eastern Europe I can offer seamless legal advice, practical guidance and translation services both for Spanish clients wishing to open new markets abroad and foreign clients interested in business opportunities in Spain and South America.

    Furthermore I regularly collaborate with other firms on projects with international elements, such as the negotiation and drafting of bilingual contracts with foreign counterparts, where my dual training as lawyer-linguist and my experience in multiparty deals are an asset.
