Best way to set up our rates - Group Discussion

You must log in before you can access most features of this event.

Schedule:This session ended at 15:15
Description:

We want to be competitive but we also want to be paid fairly for our skilled work. Furthermore, it is not always easy to know what others doing similar work are charging.

Some clients might expect discounts for higher volume of work, but if you offer a discount, will you still get a fair rate per hour of work?

This winning group discussion topic was suggested by the following ProZ.com member: Ana Gutierrez

PLEASE NOTE: In an effort to keep chat conversations manageable and enjoyable for all attendees, multiple chat rooms have been created with a maximum of 100 users in each room. If a room is full, simply enter a different room which has not reached the 100 person limit.

Rates always seem to be a closely-guarded secret, making it extremely hard to know what is a fair fee for any particular type of translation, and also to keep up to date with current rates in general. I often find I'm inundated with offers of work, but have no idea whether this is due (in part!) to the rates I charge!

The idea of anonymous data base (Ward) is rather reasonable. As for the antitrust laws (Patricia), there is a good practice in Russia - be the first one in doing something and let your opponents demand justice:). It really works!

I'd like to see an anonymous database open to all registered Proz translators where a translator can enter the rates they have just received for a job with other anonymous info such as language pair, native speaker or not, total wordcount, subject, years exp as a translator, and country. We don't need to see who the agency is or even who the translator is. But I would like this database to do a dynamic calculation, available for all to see, of the average price per word so we can all get an idea of the industry average and how it changes over time.

Great idea, Ward! I am not sure if it is legally possible with some of the antitrust laws that are in place. But seeing "normal rates" would hopefully also keep some translators from offering ridiculously low rates. I would like to find out from other participants whether they regularly adjust their rates for inflation or whether their rates stay the same over years, and if they adjust them, how they go about it, and what has worked best for them.

Opinions are often strongly expressed about the widespread agency practice of setting discounts for TM-generated 100% and fuzzy matches and repetitions. Is this clearly fair or a rip-off?

Translation rates are as low as 0.03 USD in India. We should be determined to take it to the appropriate level. Communication between Indian translators is crucial in it.
