The 2013 ProZ.com income diversification virtual event seeks to help freelance translators build multiple income streams with their bilingual skills and knowledge.
Too many qualified and talented translators take their language skills and knowledge for granted.
Translators spent a lot of money and time mastering their working languages, keeping up with the latest translation technology and trying to figure out strategies to attract an ongoing flow of clients. Yet they are often discouraged by the meager financial reward.
Freelance translators are worth way more than what they receive. The truth is a good linguist can boost their business profit simply through leveraging. This means a need to re-arrange priorities and start focusing on the tasks that bring in more profit.
Most translators are offering traditional translation services alone. It’s a great business model, but it is also a very income limiting model. Running a business solely on this model means a translator is caught in an endless client pursuit; living at the client’s mercy and becoming easily burnt out. The answer is to diversify income sources and develop a multiple income stream business.
I registered to this event, but I'm not sure to be "operational" on May 15th, because I'll be right between houses, moving from one to another, and, particularly, my DSL connection might be still "between houses", all this depending on my ISP goodwill

Siegfried, nowhere does it say that "ProZ.com no longer believes that translators can survive just by translating" - this is simply incorrect, and a disservice to follow up readers as they may assume that your opinion is fact.

The comments you have quoted are from the income diversification virtual event organizer Joy Mo. She has diversified her income and now is showing others how she has done it, and why she has found it valuable for her business. The event is free, and if you do not need or care to hear about means to diversify your income, you are certainly free to skip this event.
1,200+ ProZ.com community users have registered to attend. It would be reasonable to assume that they are interested in learning from Joy Mo ways in which they may be able to diversify their income. ▲ Collapse

Hi Drew, I am quite astonished that my entry was not deleted yet. You should know by now that I am actually somebody who believes in the value of ProZ. But fact is that the web is much larger than ProZ and its for a and if you (ProZ) would care more about what happens at other places in the web (such as Facebook groups, LinkedIn and blogs, you would have realized that this topic and the statements made by Joy Mo did not really trigger a very positive response. Don't worry, I'll register for the event, I am always interested to hear why translators are "living at the client’s mercy". Just this segment drives me mad. If this would be really the case, we should tell all students to stop studying translations asap and to learn a decent job like flipping Burgers. ▲ Collapse

Any registered site user that has registered for the virtual event, irrespective of paying membership status, may watch the recordings after the event. But you must register for the virtual event, and the registration window closes once the event ends. Anyone that is not registered for the virtual event at the time the event ends, will not be able to register, and therefore not able to watch the recordings of the videos. Simply ensure ... See more
Hi Enrique, thanks for expressing interest in the event. Any registered site user that has registered for the virtual event, irrespective of paying membership status, may watch the recordings after the event. But you must register for the virtual event, and the registration window closes once the event ends. Anyone that is not registered for the virtual event at the time the event ends, will not be able to register, and therefore not able to watch the recordings of the videos. Simply ensure that you have registered for the virtual event, and then you will be able to watch the recordings after the event at your leisure.
Siegfried's comment reminded me of my days as a university student: I was studying English to become a teacher but I always particularly enjoyed translation. However some of my teachers discouraged me from becoming a translator, claiming that you could not make a living from translation, and that it was only worth doing as long as you had another, better-paid job...
I became a translator anyway 5 or 6 years later, and I'm really glad I did! I have now been a freelan... See more

Siegfried's comment reminded me of my days as a university student: I was studying English to become a teacher but I always particularly enjoyed translation. However some of my teachers discouraged me from becoming a translator, claiming that you could not make a living from translation, and that it was only worth doing as long as you had another, better-paid job...
I became a translator anyway 5 or 6 years later, and I'm really glad I did! I have now been a freelance translator for almost 3 years, I'm loving it and I think it's a crying shame that some people (especially teachers!) try to discourage students from doing what they love!

The text in italics makes this event appear as if it were indeed organised by Proz.com and as if it were indeed Proz.com's opinion that freelance translators must build a "multiple stream business".
