English to Spanish: Defining localisation – or should we first define translation? General field: Other Detailed field: Linguistics
Source text - English Localisation currently represents a consolidated concept in translation studies, as witnessed by the inclusion of entries on localisation in encyclopaedias (Baker and Saldanha 2007) and handbooks of TS (i.e. Malmkjaer and Windle 2011; Millán and Bartrina 2013). Similarly, all comprehensive monographs on translation theory also include it as part of the discipline (Hatim and Munday 2004; Hurtado 2000; Munday 2008, 2016; Pym 2010). It is a consolidated concept in the language service industry, as reflected in associations such as the Globalization and Localization Association ( www.gala-global.org/ ) and the conference series such as Localization World (https://locworld.com/ ). Nevertheless, if both industry and TS discourses are analysed, to date “the division between translation and localisation is not quite [. . .] clear-cut”, as the terms are often used “interchangeably within the industry” (O’Hagan and Mangiron 2013: 104) and even within the discipline of TS. One of the most interesting issues in the definition of localisation is the use of translation models and paradigms, theoretical and atheoretical alike, to attempt to define it in relation to translation. It follows that the main hurdle that TS researchers encounter when approaching localisation from an epistemological standpoint is the lack of a common definition or model for translation itself (i.e. Halverson 2010; Hermans 2013). Attempting to define localisation without having a consolidated model or agreed definition of translation is thus like jumping into the void without a net.

Del mismo modo, todas las monografías sobre la teoría de la traducción también la incluyen como parte de la disciplina (Hatim y Munday 2004; Hurtado 2000; Munday 2008, 2016; Pym 2010). Es un concepto afianzado en la industria de servicios lingüísticos, como se aprecia en asociaciones como Globalization and Localization Association (www.gala-global.org/) y también en la serie de conferencias Localization World (https://locworld.com/). Sin embargo, si son analizados tanto los discursos de la industria como los estudios de traducción, hasta la fecha “la división entre la traducción y la localización no es [. . .] del todo clara”, ya que los términos son comúnmente “intercambiables dentro de la industria” (O’ Hagan y Mangiron 2013: 104) aún dentro de la disciplina de los estudios de traducción. Uno de los asuntos más interesantes en la definición de la localización es el uso de modelos y paradigmas de la traducción, tanto los teóricos como los ateóricos, para intentar definirlo en relación a la traducción. Se concluye que el principal obstáculo que los investigadores en estudios de traducción encuentran cuando abordan la localización desde un punto de vista epistemológico es la falta de una definición o modelo en común de traducción propia (es decir Halverson 2010; Hermans 2013). Intentar definir la localización sin tener un modelo consolidado o una definición establecida es como saltar al vacío sin paracaídas.
English to Spanish: LA VOZ PASIVA EN INGLÉS Y EN ESPAÑOL EN LOSMEDIOS DE COMUNICACIÓN ESCRITOS: UN ESTUDIO CONTRASTIVO General field: Other Detailed field: Linguistics
Source text - English Contrastive linguistics is a branch of linguistics which first appeared in the 1950s. Its main aim is to serve as a resource for foreign language learning or teaching as well as for translation purposes, and whose main representatives were at that moment Robert Stockwell, Robert Lado and Di Pietro (1971). The study of the differences and similarities between various languages helps us to understand the necessary strategies to overcome the difficulties in learning foreign languages.
Likewise, the systematisation of these contrasts contributes to a better organization of language acquisition and learning. Contrastive analysis focuses on the way in which a given universal category is rendered in two languages (James 1980: 142). Since one of the most frequently studied phenomena in contrastive linguistics is transfer, this same author (1980: 145) also states that a transfer from L 1 to L 2 is likely to occur when acquiring a new language. There are three kinds of transfer which depend on the existence or not of one particular structure in both languages:
Transfer 1: both languages have the same structure
Transfer 2: L1 has the structure but L2 does not.
Transfer 3: L2 has the structure but L1 does not.
Contrastive linguistics, however, does not only cover a particular level of linguistic analysis but it may be applied to the study of any level (morphology, syntax, semantics, etc.). Different surveys can be made in order to detect patterns of similarities and differences between the languages being studied providing explanations for their distribution.
This PhD dissertation aims to present a contrastive analysis of the passive voice in English and Spanish. To this end, this research work entails an initial part devoted to the revision of the literature and a second part in which an analysis of journalistic texts written in these two languages is carried out so as to test the theoretical tenets about passive constructions. The research gives a broad framework on the passive voice as a linguistic issue and as a grammatical notion present in English and Spanish, and narrows down to concentrate on the passive voice in the language of qualities and tabloids in both languages. Its aim is to analyse this grammatical structure which is hypothetically more frequent in English than Spanish, and to focus on the possible similarities and differences between its realizations in
both languages. It also aims at tracing the consistency of using the passive voice in the press, in the topic-specific sections selected and taking into account certain types of passive structures. Furthermore, it intends to find out the linguistic and extralinguistic reasons for choosing passive constructions in different contexts.
Translation - Spanish La lingüística contrastiva es una rama de la lingüística que apareció por primera vez en la década de los 50. Su objetivo principal es servir como recurso para el aprendizaje de una lengua extranjera o para la enseñanza, así como para propósitos de traducción, y cuyos principales representantes en su momento fueron Robert Stockwell, Robert Lado y Di Pietro (1971). El estudio de las diferencias y similitudes entre varios idiomas nos ayuda a entender las estrategias necesarias para superar las dificultades en el aprendizaje de idiomas extranjeros. Asimismo, la sistematización de estos contrastes contribuye a una mejor organización de la adquisición y el aprendizaje de la lengua. El análisis contrastivo se enfoca en la manera en la cual una categoría universal dada se presenta en dos idiomas (James 1980: 142). Ya que uno de los fenómenos más frecuentemente estudiados en la lingüística contrastiva es transferir, el mismo autor (1980: 145) también indica que una transferencia del L1 al L2 es probable que ocurra cuando se adquiere un idioma nuevo. Hay tres tipos de transferencia que dependen de la existencia o no de una estructura en particular en ambos idiomas:
Transferencia 1: ambos idiomas tienen la misma estructura
Transferencia 2: L1 tiene estructura, pero el L2 no.
Transferencia 3: L2 tiene estructura, pero el L1 no.
Sin embargo, la lingüística contrastiva no cubre únicamente un nivel en particular de análisis lingüístico, sino que puede ser aplicado en el estudio de cualquier nivel (morfología, sintaxis, semántica, etc.). Se pueden realizar diferentes encuestas para detectar patrones de similitudes y diferencias entre los idiomas estudiados, brindando explicaciones para su distribución.
El objetivo de esta tesis doctoral es presentar un análisis contrastivo de la voz pasiva en inglés y español. Para ello, este trabajo de investigación conlleva una parte inicial dedicada a la revisión de la literatura y una segunda parte en la cual se lleva un análisis de textos periodísticos escritos en estos dos idiomas para comprobar los principios teóricos sobre la construcción pasiva. La investigación brinda una estructura amplia sobre la voz pasiva como un asunto lingüístico y como una noción gramatical presente en inglés y español, y la reduce para concentrarse en la voz pasiva en el lenguaje de la prensa de calidad y la sensacionalista en ambos idiomas. Su objetivo es analizar esta estructura gramatical que es hipotéticamente más frecuente en inglés que en español, y enfocarse en las posibles similitudes y diferencias entre sus realizaciones en ambos idiomas. También se enfoca en rastrear la consistencia de usar la voz pasiva en la prensa, en las secciones con un tema en específico y tomando en cuenta determinados tipos de estructuras pasivas. Además, se pretende encontrar razones lingüísticas y extra lingüísticas para escoger construcciones pasivas en diferentes contextos.
