Source text - English Abstract: This article aims to contribute with a critical analysis of the relationship between integration of infrastructure and cross-border urban expansion on the Amazon. Using theoretical references anchored in dialectical-historical materialism and political ecology, this research focuses as a case study on transformations that took place in the cross-border urban continuum Cobija (Bolivia) - Brasiléia (Brazil) - Epitaciolândia (Brazil) over the past two decades. The research was supported by diverse methodological procedures and materials, which include bibliographic review of scientific publications, documentary research also upon the Initiative for the Integration of Regional Infrastructure in South America’s (IIRSA) documents, systematization of secondary statistical data and interviews. The article will present the main quantitative and qualitative data gathered, prioritizing maps and charts. In addition, the analysis will also deal with the imminence of environmental risk resulting from urbanization and the new and old social actors in the border area. Among the final considerations presented, the following stand out: i) the inconsistency between what was declared and accomplished with regard to the “local”, “sustainable” and “economic-social” development proposed by IIRSA; ii) urbanization as a geoeconomic and political project for the triple Peru-Brazil-Bolivia (PBB) border; iii) the relationship between road system and urban expansion; iv) the eminence of environmental risk as a daily fact of the new configuration in the urban continuum in question. Based on the above, the dissemination of this research may contribute to projects made by social movements, academics or local institutions that aim to diagnose or overcome socio-environmental problems of the Amazon in this century.
