English to Hausa: Salt in Food General field: Medical Detailed field: Medical: Cardiology
Source text - English Interviewer: With respect to the issue of salt in food, we know that salt poses a lot of issues and is responsible for diseases such as stroke, kidney disease, and others like high blood pressure for us. Now, my question to you is, do you think salt is a big problem in the food that we eat? The food that we eat, do they pose any problem that cause these diseases that we speak about?
Respondent: Yes. However, it depends on the state of the food and the food itself. In Nigeria, we have a lot of food, and among these foods, there are foods for the high in society and there are food that even up to this moment the poor cannot afford. I don’t know the kind of food that we can say is not good for a person.
You see for instance, in our locality, we are used to food such as guinea corn meal, maize meal, then yam. Rice, like i said before it is not everybody that can afford rice not to mention the condition we are in now, it is not everybody that eats rice. Even maize right now, for instance last year, it was going for one hundred naira, this year, one mudu (measure) of it is above two hundred naira. So, for food, it depends on the kind of food and the way it is prepared. Because everybody has his own way of preparing food. Some would go, take for example maize, they would not remove the bran as it is supposed to be done, they will not sieve it as they are supposed to do. Generally speaking, about foods, if it is not processed as should be done, there will definitely be lapses, and when you eat them, they could cause harm.
Take beans for instance, the kind of beans that are being grown these days, there was a certain time it was reported to have led to the death of several people; it was reported that some people, because these beans were treated with some chemicals, instead of them to wash them properly and ensure they cook them properly, they didn’t do so, but ate them not properly washed, and this brought about the issue. Generally, with regard to foods, it depends on how it is processed.
