Source text - Spanish Mediaba el año de 1814. La libertad sudamericana había cumplido su primer lustro de existencia entre combates y victorias; era ya un hecho: tenía ejércitos guiados por heroicos paladines, y desde las orillas del Desaguadero, hasta la ciudadela de Tucumán, nuestro suelo era
un vasto palenque, humeante, tumultuoso, ensangrentado, que el valor incansable de nuestros padres, disputaba palmo a palmo, al valor no menos incansable de sus opresores.
En aquel divorcio de un mundo nuevo, que quería vivir de su joven existencia, y de un modo añejo, que pretendía encadenarlo a la suya, decrépita y caduca; en ese inmenso desquiciamiento de creencias y de instituciones, todos los intereses estaban encontrados, los vínculos disueltos; y en el seno de las familias ardía la misma discordia que en los campos de batalla.
A los primeros ecos del clarín de mayo, los jóvenes habían corrido a alistarse bajo la bandera de los libres. Los viejos, apegados a sus tradiciones, volvían los ojos hacia España; y temiendo contaminarse al contacto del suelo rebelde que pisaban, recogían sus tesoros, y se alejaban desheredando a sus hijos insurgentes y dejándoles por único patrimonio una eterna maldición.
Translation - English It was the summer of 1814. South America had spent a half-decade fighting for its liberation; it’s now a fact. They had armies guided by heroic champions. From the shores of Lake Titicaca to the citadel of Tucumán a thousand kilometres away, our land was a vast, smouldering, tumultuous, bloodstained stockade, that our parents’ untiring valour, fought inch by inch, against their equally tireless oppressors.
In its divorce, the New World wanted to simultaneously live out its youth while maintaining its old-fashioned manner. That hoped to bind itself, decrepit and antiquated; in this immense unhinged madness of beliefs and institutions, all interests contradictory, the ties dissolved and the burns and discord from the battlefields entered the bosom of the
families.
From the first blares of the trumpet, the young men had run to enlist under the flag of the free. The elders, stuck in their traditions, turned their eyes to Spain; and fearing contamination by the soil the rebels trod on, they collected their treasures and walked away, disinheriting their insurgent sons and leaving them only a heritage of eternal damnation.

Since graduating from the University of Edinburgh in 2016, I've been working in a bilingual school near Chicago, assisting students, translating teacher communications and interpreting for parents.
