I met him only once. He came to do a reading at the university. I knew some of his work but only in translation. I thought the poems I had read were very good. A colleague told me that to hear him read was a unique experience. 'Nobody sounds like him,' the colleague said. 'He does not so much read as intone. You should go if you can.'
The room was not very big, and neither was the audience - about twenty, no more. When I arrived the poet was already there, speaking to the organiser. I went to the back of the room and sat on a chair that creaked. I sat very still when the poet was reading because I felt that every sound, however small, that did not come from his mouth, was an intrusion and a distraction.
He read each poem first in English and then in Gaelic. He seemed to resent that he had to bother with the English versions but nobody in the room except himself had Gaelic. I know this because he asked, and none of us put up a hand.
I recognised several of the poems, and liked them as I had done before but he kept complaining that the translations were very poor, very poor indeed. They did not convey either the true sense or the true sound of the originals. Somebody asked who had done them. He had done them himself he said. There was laughter. He said it was no laughing matter. The fact of the matter was that English could not convey what the Gaelic conveyed.
Afterwards I bought a copy of his book, as did several others. Gaelic was on one page and English on the facing page. I asked him to sign my copy and said that in spite of his reservations I greatly admired the English versions of his poems.
He looked very mournful. 'They are inadequate,' he said as he signed his name. I felt that he knew what he was talking about, and that I too was inadequate. Then he smiled at me, as if to apologise for making me feel that way.
That smile has stayed with me.

Мой приятель сказал мне, что услышать, как он читает, было уникальным опытом. “Никто не говорит так, как он,” рассказывал приятель. “Он не столько читает, сколько распевает. Тебе стоит сходить, если будет такая возможность”.
Зал был небольшой, небольшой была и слушающая аудитория - около двадцати человек, не более. Когда я пришел, поэт уже был на месте и разговаривал с организатором. Я прошел в конец зала и сел на кресло, которое скрипнуло подо мной. Всё время, пока поэт читал, я сидел неподвижно, потому что мне казалось, что любой, выходящий не из его уст, звук, даже самый незначительный, был вмешательством, отвлекающим внимание.
Каждое стихотворение он сначала читал по-английски и затем по-гэльски. Ему, похоже, не нравилось, что приходилось отвлекаться на английский перевод, но никто из зала, кроме него самого, не понимал гэльского языка. Я знаю это, потому что, когда он спросил, никто не поднял руку.
Я узнал несколько стихотворений, и они мне понравились точно так же, как и прежде, но он продолжал жаловаться на то, что перевод был действительно плохим. Он посмотрел уныло. “Он недостаточно хорош,” сказал он, подписавшись.
Чувствовалось, что он знает, о чем говорит, и что я тоже был недостаточно хорош.
Затем он улыбнулся мне, как-будто извиняясь за то, что заставил меня так подумать.
Эта улыбка осталась со мной.

Рукопись представляет собой полную копию Корана в картонном переплете, обтянутом кожей. На л. 1 - заголовок Корана почерком сульс с пояснительной припиской:

Перевод: “Слово Божие предвечное, несотворенное. Для людей сунны противоположное утверждение [принадлежит еретикам] му' тазилитам”.
Т.е. имеется в виду, что утверждение о непредвечности и сотворенности Корана принадлежит еретикам-му'тазилитам. Стоит отметить, что подзаголовки такого рода довольно редки в списках Коранов. Так что, этот список представляет одно из редких исключений из общего правила.
В верхнем картуше на правом титульном листе (л. 1об), украшенном унваном, название I суры (“Фатиха”) с указанием числа айатов и ее ниспослания в Мекке. В нижнем картуше на том же листе и в двух картушах следующего листа начертаны три Посвященные Корану бейта из знаменитой касылы “Бурда”, принадлежащей перу Салиха Шарафуддина Мухаммада ал-Бусайри (XIII в.):

Перевод: “Знамения Истины от Милостивого появились…” и т.д. Последняя строка сохранилась лишь частично из-за разрыва листа.
Рукопись завершается несколькими трактатами богословского содержания (лл. 259-285). Причем, как сам текст Корана, так и два из последующих трактатов снабжены колофонами переписчика, принадлежащих одной и той же руке.

The manuscript is a complete copy of the Quran in a cardboard binding, covered with leather. Sheet 1 has the Quran title in Thuluth with an explanatory postscript:

In other words, it is meant that the claim about the unreality and creation of the Quran belongs to the heretical Muʿtazilites. It is worth noting that the subheadings of this kind are rather rare in copies of the Quran. So, this copy represents one of the rarest exceptions to the general rule.
The upper cartouche on the right front page (sheet 1 back side), decorated with an unwan, has the title of the first Sūrat al-Fātiḥah with the indication of the number of āyāt and when it was sent down in Mecca. The cartouche at the bottom of the same page and the two cartouches on the next page have two beits, dedicated to the Quran, taken from Qasīdat al-Burda, written by al-Būsīrī in the 13th century:

The translation goes like this: ‘Verses of truth from the Most Merciful newly heard…’ etc. The last line is partly lost due to a tear.
The manuscript ends with several treatises of theological content (sheets 259-285). What is more, both the Quran and two of the following treatises are provided with the scriber’s colophons whose handwriting belongs to one and the same person.
