Translation - English I believe that human thought possesses energy and that words have the power to create or destroy. All you need to do is think of something, and suddenly the invisible threads of your thoughts go flying on unseen wings into the infinite depths of the Cosmos. There, out of reach and out of sight, a golden needle weaves those threads of thought into the tangible fabric of worlds where ideas and dreams become realities. These worlds, which genuinely exist, are filled with the good and evil of our imagining, governed by laws of our creation; through them roam the heroes of our minds, and we decide their joys and sorrows. Let us leave our earthly cares behind, step out of our physical bodies, and open a hidden door onto a boundless expanse where countless worlds surround us. Don’t be afraid – I won’t let you get lost in the places we visit. They sprang from my imagination, after all, so who better than I to guide you on their paths?
Take my hand – a wonderful adventure awaits us!
Russian to English: Creative copywriting for a gaming localization website General field: Other Detailed field: Gaming/Video-games/E-sports
Source text - Russian When you spend a lot of time creating your product, you know all the ins and outs of it. You closely work with designers and artists, you know what your product looks like, you can see the entire visual picture including UI, characters, locations, vehicles, levels, buttons, settings, menus, reward icons, etc.
Then, you export the text part and give it to your translators. Good thing if they could find some info on your product online (which may not necessarily help) but often they don't see the parts of the interface where their translations will be used which means your translators have to work blindfolded. This is one of the main problems!
The best way is to provide them with a build/application/website along with the files to translate, show them screenshots, record some walk-through videos, give them as much visual references as possible. This way your translator will have a chance to learn more about your product and get the right idea about it before start working.
English is an analytic language, which means it primarily conveys relationships between words in sentences by way of particles, prepositions, etc. and word order as opposed to utilizing inflections.
That means if you combine a phrase from different parts translated separately, which perfectly works for English or Chinese by the way, chances are it won't work for Russian and other synthetic languages due to inflections and genders. You're just breaking the grammar rules.
In the best case scenario, you'll get a translation with clumsy workarounds. In the worst case scenario, you'll need to make changes into your code to get those strings ready for the localization.
It's obvious from the below example that either "Common" or "Guild Gift" was translated separately and one of them is used as a variable. That led to gender and capitalization issue. "MORE" was also translated separately from "+600%", which led to another mistake.
Translation - English So, you've created your product. Congratulations! You've poured tons of time and energy into it, you've collaborated closely with designers and artists, and you know every pixel in intimate detail. You can see the entire visual picture: UI, characters, locations, vehicles, levels, buttons, settings, menus, reward icons, and everything else.
So far, so good. Next, you export your text and send it to your translator(s). Here's where things start to get off track. Unable to see the parts of the interface in which their translations will be used, translators have to resort to researching your product online (which won't necessarily help) or simply working blindfolded. This is one of the main issues I come across in localization!
The best way to avoid this hiccup is to give your translation team access to your build/application/website along with the files to be translated. Show them screenshots, record walk-through videos for them — in a nutshell, give them as many visual references as possible. That way, your translator can get familiar with the ins and outs of the concept, design, and functionality of your product before they start their work.
English is an analytic language, meaning it primarily conveys relationships between words in sentences by way of things like particles, prepositions, and word order as opposed to utilizing inflections.
This means that if you craft a phrase out of words which have been translated separately, the concatenation of the sentence will likely be logical in English (and, incidentally, in a language like Chinese), but probably isn't going to work for Russian. This is because Russian, and other languages like it, are synthetic languages, and when you combine words that have been translated without regard to inflections of gender, number, case, etc., you're going to end up breaking grammar rules.
Best-case scenario, you'll be left with a translation full of clumsy workarounds. Worst-case scenario, you'll need to alter your code in order to prepare your strings for localization.
In the example below, the terms "Common" and "Guild Gift" have clearly been translated separately: "Common" has been translated in the singular form, while "Guild Gift" is in the plural form. This indicates that one or both of the terms is a variable which has been coded using English grammar rules, leading to a single/plural mismatch. Additionally, the word "Guild", which should not be capitalized in Russian since it appears within a sentence, has remained capitalized as it would be in English.

Source text - Russian -
Translation - English “Have they already shown you around?”– the woman seemed to appear out of thin air.
Oh lord, this day is punishing me yet again. He flinched sharply, as if in pain. Aloud, he said:
“Thank you, ma’am – even if they haven’t shown me everything, I’ll take a look around myself tomorrow.”
“Didn’t your welcome to the house please you?”– for a humble maid, she asked too many questions.
“Maybe it’s not just about the welcome, but more about my entire day. But why is that of interest to you?”
“I worked as a secretary to the previous master of the house for several years. When my services were no longer needed, I moved to New York. If you were to need me, though, I could always come back."
“Come back? What for? And what’s your name?”
“Jenny. I’m the daughter of the man who came to meet you today. As I gathered, you didn’t like your reception. Might I ask why?”
“Today is just one of those days. The plane circled for a whole hour before making an emergency landing. The taxi driver decided to take a shortcut and got stuck in an even bigger traffic jam, which we then sat in for an extra forty minutes. Your father managed to drop my suitcase practically onto my foot – but other than that, the meeting and the move went fine, thank you for your concern.”

Les parfums ne font pas frissonner sa narine ;
Il dort dans le soleil, la main sur sa poitrine
Tranquille. Il a deux trous rouges au côté droit.
Translation - English In the verdant hollow a river sings,
Throwing up tendrils of silvery thread
On the grass; where the sun, from the mountain’s great wings,
Gleams: in the valley the golden beams spread.
A young soldier, mouth open, head bare,
On a dewy pillow of fresh blue cress,
Sleeps; he is stretched in the grass, ‘neath the air,
Pale in his bed with the sun’s green caress.
With his feet in the foxgloves, he sleeps. Smiling the smile
Of a feverish child, his rest is light:
Nature, warmly cradle him: he is cold.
No perfume will stir up a quiver in his breast;
He sleeps in the sun, a hand on his chest,
Serene. In his side are two hollow red holes.

Translation - English “The customers decided on the ‘Petersburg’ theme. In order to show guests the best parts of our beloved city with a touch of humour, style, elements of kitsch and our favourite loft,” Max explains, “we chose locations based on their significance and the ‘playfulness’ of the interior, so as to display the theme clearly. That’s how the ‘Isaac’, ‘Aurora’, ‘Vaganovka’, ‘Ciniselli Circus’, ‘Amber Room’ and ‘Petrosvky Gardens’ came about.”
Living Room
The interior is carried out in ‘Petersburg grey’, but thanks to the colourful accents and multiple red sofas, the space feels lush, playful and joyful. This is ‘St. Isaac’s Square’, with its dome chandelier and small floor lamps, offering plenty of space for a large group around the dining table, as well as on the soft sofas and the suspended nesting chairs.
This themed interior required just the right furniture, lighting and decor, and locating such things ready-made is a challenge. Therefore, many of the items were made to order.

Source text - Russian
Translation - English Will you sing me the song that our mother
Used to hum to us when she was old.
I’ll regret not the hope that has faded,
I’ll find courage to echo the notes.
Will you sing to me, for my delight comes
From the thought that I loved not alone
The old gate of the garden in autumn
And the leaves fallen down from the rowan.
And forever through mist and through dew I
Came to love the lean trunk of the birch,
With its golden and shimmering tendrils,
And its rough canvas pinafore skirt.
And the burden my heart bears is lighter
With an evening of drinking and song
For you showed me in memory that birch tree
As it stands, still, by our childhood home.

Translation - English Spring. The wind carries honey yellow pollen from over the Green Wall, some feral flower on the unseen planes. This sweet pollen dries the lips - you pass your tongue over them minute by minute - and every woman (and man) you meet probably has sweet, dry lips. It somewhat impedes logical thought.
But: what a sky! Deep blue, perfectly cloudless (the ancients must have been such savages; their poets were inspired by those silly, disordered, stupidlingering piles of steam). I love - and I know I’m correct if I say we love - only this flawless, sterile sky. On days like this the whole world is cast from the same eternal, immutable glass as the Green Wall, as all of our structures. On days like this you see the deepest blue depths of things, the previously unknown, the astounding element in the equation – you see it in the familiar day-to-day.
This morning, for example, I was at the Integral construction dock when I suddenly noticed the machines: the spheres of the regulators were spinning, eyes closed, with enthusiastic abandon; the glittering cranks bowed left and right; the balancer proudly swung its shoulders; the mortiser chisel was squatting in time to inaudible music. I suddenly saw the pervasive beauty of this vast mechanical ballet, swimming in delicate blue sunlight.
