Source text - English Since last week, cheese producers from around the world can nominate their cheeses for participation in the so-called "World Cheese Awards" which will be held in the framework of the International Cheese Festival form 16 to 18 November in San Sebastian in Spain's Basque Country.
This is only the third time since 1988, when the World Cheese Award started, that it is taking place outside of the United Kingdom. The Basque and Spanish organizers of the International Cheese Festival must have offered attractive conditions to attract the Award. Not least, the publicity surrounding the event - San Sebastian is also a European Capital of Culture this year - is expected to attract a record number of 3.000 cheese producers from 40 countries.
Every participant means revenues for the organisers of the Award, the UK-based Guild of Fine Food, a private for-profit organisation. At a fee of GBP 45 (USD 59) per nominated cheese, several hundred thousand dollars in revenue are being generated for the organisers. The awards themselves serve as marketing instruments for the participating companies. For example, last year over 700 gold, silver and bronze prizes were awarded, and then used by the producers of respective products to differentiate themselves from the competition.
These types of relatively easily obtainable awards have originally been invented for wine but have spread meanwhile to other fine food categories like chocolate (see our story) and cheese. For example, in the UK alone, there is a second major cheese competition called International Cheese Awards.
The driving force of the festival on the Basque side is Artzai Gazta, an association of 116 independent producers of the Idiazabal cheese, which is a pressed and matured cheese from unpasteurized sheeps' milk. Idiazabal is certified since 1987 as Protected Denomination of Origin and can only be produced from the milk of Latxa and Carranzana type sheep in Basque country and Navarro province.
To celebrate Idiazabal cheese, Artzai Gazta is organizing a show-in-the-show called "Gazta" where European producers of cheese from raw, i.e. unpasteurized, milk will present their products. Other events include technical seminars on cheese making and on detecting fraudulent products as well as cooking performances by famous chefs pairing cheese and wine. The last day of the festival will be open to the public.
