Óc Eo là tên gọi một địa điểm khảo cổ học lần đầu tiên được phát hiện và khai quật ở vùng đồng bằng sông Cửu Long, địa điểm này thuộc huyện Thoại Sơn, cách thành phố Long Xuyên 30 Km. Qua những gì khai quật các nhà khảo cổ cho rằng đây là một thương cảng thời Trung cổ bị chìm sâu dưới lòng đất và được phát hiện khi nhân dân đào kinh xáng Ba Thê vào năm 1942.
Sau khi khai quật và công bố thì có nhiều vết tích gắn liền với vương Quốc Phù Nam. Vương Quốc này hình thành từ đầu công nguyên và bị Chân Lạp xâm chiếm vào khoảng năm 550. Qua nghiên cứu các nhà khảo cổ đưa ra ý kiến rằng chủ nhân của nền văn hoá Phù Nam là người bản địa thuộc chủng Indônésien. Về đặc điểm hình thể và cách ăn mặc của họ có những nét giống với các dân tộc bản địa ở vùng cao nguyên Đông Dương. Chữ viết của người Phù Nam cổ là loại chữ Brami, văn tự dùng ở Phù Nam là loại được dùng ở Ấn Độ từ TK II đến TK V. Một số khảo cứu từ bia ký cũng cho rằng đại bộ phận người Phù Nam nói tiếng Môn – Khmer. Nền văn hoá Phù Nam phát triển liên tục bảy thế kỷ trên một vùng nhiệt đới ẩm, đất đai phì nhiêu. Nhờ những tài nguyên phong phú của nội địa và nhờ vị trí trung gian trên con đường hàng hải từ Ấn Độ - Trung Quốc mà nơi này trở thành một thương cảng lớn của Đông Nam Á lúc bấy giờ. Qua những di vật khai quật được các nhà khoa học cho rằng văn hóa Phù Nam mang rất nhiều yếu tố Ấn Độ - Trung Á và Địa Trung Hải. Tín ngưỡng thì chịu ảnh hưởng của văn hoá Ấn Độ và sự du nhập của đạo Bà La Môn và Đạo Phật qua một số hiện vật nổi bật như bộ Linga – Yoni bằng đá cao 2,10m khai quật tại Cát Tiên – Lâm Đồng vào năm 1996, bộ Linga – Yoni này được cho là lớn nhất Đông Nam Á, tượng thần Vishnu Anata nay được thờ ở chùa Linh Sơn (Ba Thê – An Giang), tượng thờ Vishnu thờ ở miếu Bà Chúa Xứ núi Sam, tượng Phật bằng gỗ cao 2m hiện lưu giữ tại bảo tàng An Giang….Cũng qua nghiên cứu các nhà khoa học cho rằng cư dân Phù Nam xưa kia di chuyển bằng voi, kể cả việc săn bắn. Tang lễ của họ có một số quy định chặt chẽ như người chịu tang phải cạo cả râu, tóc và tục an táng bằng: Thuỷ táng, Hoả táng, Địa táng, Điểu táng.
Trước khi phát hiện tại Óc Eo, nền văn hóa này được người Pháp khám phá đầu tiên vào năm 1879 với nhiều cuộc khai quật ở Cần Giờ, Vũng Tàu… mà sau này khi khám phá thành thị cổ ở Ba Thê người ta gọi đó là thời kỳ Tiền Óc Eo. Giai đoạn từ 1936 đến 1944 dưới sự quan tâm của ông G. Coedès - giám đốc trường Viễn Đông bác cổ và ông Malleret đã trực tiếp khảo sát và phát hiện ra nhiều cổ vật bằng đá xanh nhưYoni, chân trụ, bàn nghiền. Năm 1956 ông G. Coedès tiếp tục phát hiện được vòng thành cổ của khu di tích văn hoá Óc Eo. Qua những gì phát hiện được trong thời gian này các nhà nghiên cứu cho rằng văn hóa Óc Eo đã từng phát triển rực rỡ mà biểu hiện của nó là những đặc trưng như: Kỹ thuật chinh phục đầm lầy khá cao thể hiện qua cách sử lý đất thấp làm nơi cư trú bằng cách cất nhà sàn bằng gỗ và việc thực hiện hệ thống kinh đào toả rộng nhiếu nơi trên đồng bằng châu thổ sông Cửu Long; nền thủ công mỹ nghệ khá phát triển như kim hoàn, luyện thuỷ tinh, gốm gạch, tạc tượng điêu khắc…; kiến trúc xây dựng bằng gạch đá có quy mô lớn, giao lưu văn hoá với nhiều nền văn minh khác trên thế giới như văn hóa Đông Sơn ở phía Bắc Việt Nam, Trung Quốc, Ấn Độ, Mã Lai, La Mã...
Từ sau năm 1975, khi đất nước Việt Nam thống nhất thì viện khoa học xã hội thành phố Hồ Chí Minh bắt tay vào kế hoạch nghiên cứu văn hoá khảo cổ Óc Eo cùng với nền văn hoá Sa Huỳnh, văn hoá Đồng Nai … Lần đầu tiên ngoài di tích cư trú, di tích kiến trúc, khảo cổ học đã phát hiện được di tích mộ táng thuộc văn hoá Óc Eo cùng với những sưu tập hiện vật chôn trong mộ có giá trị nghiên cứu lớn. Đến những năm 1980 từ những di chỉ khảo cổ các nhà khoa học cả Việt Nam và thế giới đã phát hiện ra rằng văn hóa Óc Eo không chỉ phân bố ở địa bàn hai tỉnh An Giang – Kiên Giang và một phần của tỉnh Cà Mau và Đồng Tháp mà trải rộng trên khắp đồng bằng Nam Bộ đến tận Lâm Đồng như: Di tích nền chùa thuộc xã Tân Hợi, huyện Tân Hiệp, Tỉnh Kiên Giang; Di tích Gò Tháp huyện Tháp Mười, tỉnh Đồng Tháp một loại hình về cư trú, di tích mộ táng và kiến trúc; Di tích Đá Nổi trong cánh đồng đá nổi thuộc xã Phú hoà , huyện Thoại Sơn tỉnh An Giang; Di Tích Lưu Cừ xã Lưu Nghiệp Anh, huyện Trà Cú tỉnh Cửu Long (Trà Vinh); Di tích kiến trúc Cây Gáo ở vị trí tả ngạn sông Đồng Nai, phường Cây Gáo 11, xã Vĩnh An; Di tích Bình Tả huyện Đức Hoà , tỉnh Long An , phát hiện 3 ngôi đền bằng gạch thuộc tín ngưỡng Ấn Độ giáo cùng với một số mộ táng; Di tích Gò Thành thuộc ấp Tân Thành, xã Tân Thuận Bình, huyện Chợ Gạo, tỉnh Tiền Giang; Di tích Phụng Sơn Tự (chùa Gò), thành phố Hồ Chí Minh...
Ngày nay qua những di chỉ phát hiện được cùng những hiện vật, các nhà khảo cổ học đã tìm ra được chủ nhân của nền văn hóa Óc Eo khi xưa là ai, tồn tại trong thời gian nào nhưng vì lý do nào nó lụi tàn và biến mất thì còn vấn đề khó hiểu với các nhà khoa học. Cũng có người thì cho rằng Phù Nam không phải là đế quốc đã được tổ chức thống nhất thành một bộ máy cai trị và bóc lột mà chỉ là sự tập hợp của những tiểu quốc, trong đó bộ phận chủ yếu của nó là chủ nhân của nền văn hóa Óc Eo trên đất Nam Bộ. Vùng đất này vào cuối thế kỷ VI bị người Chân Lạp (người Khơme) nói tiếng Nam Á thôn tính. Chính do sự thống trị của người Chân Lạp ở khu vực văn hóa Óc Eo lỏng lẻo nên khu vực này dần trở thành đất hoang, vô chủ và sau này người ta quên lãng quá khứ huy hoàng của nó.

Translation - French La culture d’Oc Eo
Oc Eo est le nom d’un site archéologique qui était découvert et fouillé pour la première fois dans le delta du Mékong. Ce site est situé dans le district de Thoai Son, à 30 km de la ville de Long Xuyen. Grâce aux objets recueillis lors de la fouille, les scientifiques ont parvenu à conclure que c’était un port commercial au Moyen-âge enterré profondément dans le sol. Il a été trouvé par les habitants lors du creusement de canal de Ba Thê en 1942.
Après la fouille et l’annonce de la découverte du site, de nombreux vestiges qui sont attachés au Royaume de Phu Nam ont été mis au jour. Ce royaume fut fondé avant J.-C puis envahi par le Royaume de Chan Lap vers l’an 550. Au terme de leurs études, les archéologues ont supposé que les maîtres de la culture de Phu Nam étaient les indigènes indonésiennes. Leurs caractéristiques physiques et leur mode d’habillement ont des points similaires à ceux des autochtones dans les plateaux d’Indochine. L’écriture des anciens habitants de Phu Nam est le Brahmi, une ancienne écriture qui était également utilisé en Inde du IIè siècle jusqu’au Vè siècle. Certaines études des stèles ont affirmé que la majorité des habitants de Phu Nam parlaient la langue mon-khmer. La culture Phu Nam s’est développée continuellement durant sept siècles sur une région tropicale humide et fertile. Grâce à ses ressources naturelles abondantes et sa position géographique sur la route maritime reliant l’Inde et la Chine, ce territoire est devenu un important port commercial en Asie du Sud-est à cette époque. À travers des vestiges fouillés, les archéologues ont parvenu à conclure que la culture de Phu Nam portait des traits culturels de l’Inde, de l’Asie central et de la Méditerranée. Sa religion est fortement influencée par la culture indienne et par l’introduction du brahmanisme et du bouddhisme, ce qui a été prouvé par certains remarquables anciens articles comme le Lingam-Yoni en pierre de 2,10m de haut, fouillés à Cat Tien – Lam Dong en 1996. Ce Lingam-Yoni est reconnu comme le plus grand en Asie du Sud-est. D’autres extraordinaires articles recueillis sont: le statut de Vishnu Anata qui est aujourd’hui vénéré à la pagode Linh Son (Ba The – province de An Giang), le statut de Vishnu vénéré au temple Ba Chua Xu dans la montagne Sam, le statut du Bouddha (en bois) de 2 mètres de haut qui est conservé actuellement au musée de la province de An Giang... C’est aussi à travers des recherches archéologiques que les scientifiques ont conclu que les anciens habitants de Phu Nam se déplaçaient en éléphant, même quand ils allaient à la chasse. Leurs funérailles comprends des règles très stricts, par exemple, ceux qui portent le deuil doivent se couper sa barbe et ses cheveux ; les types d’enterrement sont variées : le défunt est enterré ou incinéré, laissé emporter par l’eau (enterrement fluvial) ou manger par les oiseaux (enterrement céleste).
Avant qu’elle soit découverte à Oc Eo, cette culture a été exploitée pour la première fois par les Français en 1879, ce qui est précédé par de nombreuses fouilles à Can Gio, Vung Tau... Plus tard, quand l’ancien citadelle de Ba Thê a été découvert dans ces sites, l’époque à laquelle il appartient a été nommé l’époque de l’avant-Oc Eo. De 1936 à 1944, sous l’égide de G. Coedès – Directeur de l’École française d’Extrême-Orient, l’archéologue Louis Malleret a directement dirigé les fouilles lors de laquelle de nombreuses antiquités fabriquées en pierre bleue comme les yonis, les piliers ou les tables à broyer ont été retrouvées. En 1956, G. Coedès a découvert la muraille entourant le site archéologique et culturel d’Oc Eo. Grâce à ces résultats de recherches, les archéologues ont parvenu à conclure que la culture d’Oc Eo a atteint un très haut niveau, ce qui manifeste par ses caractéristiques comme : la bonne maîtrise des techniques d’exploitation du marécage (par exemple, leur habitat était des maison sur pilotis construit en bois sur des bas terrains ; ou bien le système de canaux d’irrigation et drainage qui s’étendait sur le delta du Mékong) ; les métiers artisanaux assez développés (à savoir: orfèvrerie, fabrication du verre, la céramique, la sculpture, etc.…) ; l’architecture de brique et de pierre en grande envergure ; l’acculturation avec de nombreuses civilisations du monde comme la culture de Dong Son au Nord du Vietnam, celle de la Chine, de l’Inde, de la Malaisie et de la civilisation romaine.
Après la réunification du Vietnam en 1975, l’Institut des Sciences Sociales de Ho Chi Minh-ville s’est mis sur pied le projet de recherches archéologiques sur la culture Oc Eo, la culture de Sa Huynh et la culture de Dong Nai. Pour la première fois, à part des traces d’habitat et d’architecture, les archéologues ont découvert un vestige des tombes appartenant à la culture Oc Eo avec les collections d’offrandes enterrées dans les tombes qui recèlent une valeur importante pour leurs études. Jusqu’aux années 80, grâce aux sites archéologiques, les scientifiques vietnamiens et étrangers ont découvert que la répartition de la culture Oc Eo ne se limitait pas dans les 2 provinces d’An Giang et Kien Giang et une partie de la province de Ca Mau mais s’étendait sur toute la plaine du Sud jusqu’à la province de Lam Dong. Parmi ces fameux sites, on peut citer les vestiges de la base d’une pagode à la circonscription Tan Hoi, district Tan Hiep, province de Kien Giang; le site de Gò Tháp au district Thap Muoi, province de Dong Thap, qui représente une forme d’habitat, d’enterrement et d’architecture ; le site de Da Noi (pierres levés) dans le champ des pierres levés à la circonscription Phu Hoa, district Thoai Son, An Giang province ; le site de Luu Cu qui se situe à la circonscription Luu Nghiep Anh, district Tra Cu, province de Cuu Long (Tra Vinh) ; le site d’architecture de Cay Gao qui se situe au rive gauche du fleuve Dong Nai, circonscription Cay Gao et Vinh An ; le site de Binh Tay qui se trouve au district Duc Hoa, province de Long An, où l’on a trouvé 3 temples hindous construits en brique et certaines tombes ; le site de Go Thanh au village Tân Thanh, circonscription Tan Thuan Binh, district Cho Gao, province de Tien Giang; le site de Phung Son Tu (ou Chùa Gò) à Ho Chi Minh-ville...
Aujourd’hui, à travers des sites fouillés et les objets recueillis, les archéologues ont su qui sont les maitres de la culture d’Oc Eo et dans quelle époque ils vivaient mais les causes de son déclin et sa disparition restent encore un mystère. Certains croient que Phu Nam n’était pas un empire qui était dument organisé (par la centralisation de pouvoir) pour gouverner et exploiter ses peuples, mais ce n’est juste qu’un regroupement des petits royaumes dont la majorité étaient maîtres de la culture d’Oc Eo dans la région du Sud (du Vietnam actuel). Cette région a été annexée par les habitants de Chan Lap (ce sont les habitants khmers qui parlent la langue sud-asiatique). A cause de leur faible contrôle, ce territoire s’est devenu privée de propriétaire. Son passé somptueux est alors tombé dans l’oubli.
